If they are your best customers, who utilize your services often, try one of two approaches:
1) If you are a large printing company, offer them a one-time deal of the service for free, up to a certain amount, no additional purchase necessary. Make the amount generous, within reason. Set your standards high, and let your customers know exactly why they are receiving the gift. You can also do a sliding scale, offering free services to the very best, but 1/2 off to the others you really value.
2) If you are a small business, see if you can offer a gift basket or coupon book of coupons to local restaurants, florists, salons, wine shops, etc. - just $5 here, buy 1 get one 1/2 price there, etc. Small businesses always do better when they support each other, and people love to stay local when they have an incentive to do so. There is a good chance you will also get more business from the others you advertise for in this way.

Gift certificates are always great--just make sure they're for a well-known business (or your business!), not some obscure place. It also depends on how expensive you want the gift to be--nice bookmarks are great small gifts, but if you want something larger or more personal...small cookie bouquets are always fun and practical. Maybe give customers a choice between three gifts, like three different popular books or DVD's. Or try a mug--a lot of businesses do that-but make it more fun than just handing them a mug: fill the mug with a bag of coffee beans, or candy bars, etc. Overall: make it attractive and fun/memorable, but generic, so that a variety of ages and personalities will like the gift.

to me that would depend on the business. Christmas cards are nice. Pens are always welcome... as for coffee mugs in a nice box,, calendars , koozies.
I am not sure how much you are willing to pay, or how many customers you have ,,but look on the internet and they have a lot of websites where you can pick and choose your items and put your business logo on it.
If you want it on a more personal level... then fix up baskets w/ the latest DVD release, and add scented jar candles, along w/ quality chocolates.. you could also make a basket w/ local movie passes,,,and add candy, and popcorn, and wrap up w/ cellophane and a large bow.
Spiral hams, steaks, or turkeys would go over well too! ( i know we love it when we get ours every year! )
Gift card to local restaurants are always welcomed too!

That depends on what kind a business you have. If it is an ice cream store, some free ice cream is great. If it is a tire store, an air pressure gauge is a great gift. If it is a financial business, a better rate of return is great.

Anything personalized. People love crap with their name on it. Case in point: my dad worked at a printing shop when I was a kid and had pencils made up with my name on them. That was over 20 years ago and I STILL HAVE THEM.
Maybe I just have some issues.

Some free business cards are always nice. If they prefer, you can print cards with name, home or cell phone and e-mail on them. I always have cards like that for convenience. You can also have your business name and phone # printed on the back.
