I went to California to visit my aunt who is in her 80's. While every thind was fine the first couple of days, she did something that I've never witnessed. At first I thought she was upset with me because I started crying, but that was only the first minutes. I had gone with my grandma, and they're spanish speakers while I am not. My aunt had said in English to my grandmother to give me a slap....because I am not acting like a lady. My Grandmother started to fight with her saying that she would not let her do that, and by that time I couln't get my cellphone to call home so I was stuck for the most part. I hid around the corner for a minute or two and when I walked out, my aunt had shouted at my Grandmother, "Well you can go to Hell!" ...I was shocked. I said I wasn't a lady, or anything close to one, but just a teenager. I won't go any farther than that...

What does this sound like? I don't know how to define it.

What does this sound like to you?....A possible bad state of mind?

If this is not a typical way for her to act, it may be Alzheimer's Disease. Anger is extremely common for Alzheimer's patients, especially in the beginning.

I'm sorry about your aunt.

Your grandmother does not believe in hitting - good for her - but your aunt thinks slapping you is okay. I think your aunt was behaving badly and your grandmother was standing her ground. It sounds like just an argument between a mother and daughter, even though they are kind of old for such an argument.

Anger is one of the first signs of Alzheimers disease. However, it could be some new medication or even just hearing the annoying dog from across the street bark too many times.

OK, I am not sure if I followed this correctly, but it sounds like she was defending you. Another thing it sounds like is it a cultural thing. Either way, it sound like your aunt has some issues. Hope you can find the answers. GL

Understand the age of your aunt. Sometimes people of that age don't think as clearly as they did at a younger age. I'd suggest you continue to be friendly with her but when she is inappropriate tell her you don't like what she is doing but you like her as a person.
