Yes, and we're taxed again when we spend it, and then there are all the other taxes: TV License, car tax, Council Tax, etc.

All of you out there should be very grateful that you actually have an organised tax system that ensures that you have the security of a civilised society to live in. Good roads, constant electricity, good and clean drinking water, equipped schools and hospitals, welfare for the less previledge (or less abled) so that they don't have to rob you armed with the latest ammunition in the daylight; and so much more, that you all take for granted because you are all so selfish and do not understand how it is for the other three quarters of the world's population who would pay any amount of tax, just to get a job and have two square meals. People would pay 100% in tax, if only they can be guaranteed their basic needs (not wants) in LIFE. Stop being selfish and thank your lucky stars for who you are, where you were born, and for our Government's that have to make the difficult decisions to ensure that our societies remain advanced, secure and civilised!

No way! We pay way too much tax here. Under the 3 labour governments, household tax burden has increased by 22% on average! And dont even get me started off on rip off britain. We live in a country where we suffer some of the worst public services in the western world with one of the highest tax burdens. Regardless of income, you are getting very bad value for your money. Income tax is just one of the many taxes we pay and many - rightly perhaps, depending on your political convictions - view this as a redistributive method. However, a large proportion of taxes here are not linked with your income - such as NI, stamp duty, inheritence tax, VAT, council tax etc. All these have also no role in creating any better income distribution. All they do is fill the ever bloating government's coffers to permit it to come up with ever extravagent, pie in the sky schemes to keep our army of useless civil servents employed!

unfortunately this whole country is run on peoples taxes , the poor stay poor and the rich just use their money to get even more rich, and for a lot of so called asylum seekers its money heaven, the government in my view is doing or has done little to benefit the people, I'm no expert by trying to answer this question but after being a resident for more than 25 years in London , i have watched prices for almost everything rise every year and it is becoming more and more difficult for people to make a living and reside in London alone, i think that people on low income and certain categories such as single parents should pay no tax what so ever, too much is being spent on red tape and faults with computer systems that cost the tax payer money every year, money that could be spent else where, the tax system does little to encourage people to want to work , which is why people sign on and still work and do not declare it, but its not just tax, the cost of living is so high that people have to find ways of dodging the system, or die trying, you have to pay to park your car, TV license , car tax, inheritance tax , council tax the list goes on.
i don't think its going to end.

Of course we do!
There are only two certain things in life, death and taxes!
It's the higher rate taxes that annoy me though, especially in areas of the country where the cost of living is high, I mean let's face it £38k (the higher rate bracket) is hardly a high salary in London considering how high property prices are.
I wouldn't mind the higher rate if it only affected people who were really earning lots of money.
Not sure why you think that low earners pay more income tax as roughly £5k is tax free then the next £2k is taxed at 10%, then it moves onto 22% until you earn £38k at which point the 40% bracket kicks in.

Everyone should pay the SAME percentage of his income as tax. That way ,high earners would pay more and low earners less.It is the different percentage that infuriates me ,the fact that some pay NO taxes at all and the lazy ones who DON'T feel like working. If social security went to the people who really need it we would all pay less taxes. But unfortunately it usually goes to the "smart" ones who abuse the system.

We pay tax for the common good.
What goes into the pot should then be spread out to the needy in the society, this is the Labour way.
Alas, greed and corruption spoil this great ideal

Well, presumably the majority are happy with the present system or there would surely be a larger turnout at election time.
