This happened to my mom. She took her car to be inspected so she could get it relicensed. The shop told her she had to get a ton of work done, to the tune of about $700, $700 she did not have. She then took it to another shop for a second opinion and they said everything was fine. How is it that one shop would say $700 and another it's fine? Is what the first shop did criminal?

One of three things happened.

One, the first shop was trying to sell un-needed repairs.

Two, the second shop missed the repairs that were really needed

Three, (most likely) the car was in a marginal position, meaning the repairs could be justified, but not absolutely needed.

Some shops look at inspections as a chance to sell repairs, some look at them as a quick procedure that they make money doing. I would continue to patronize the second mechanic, and would avoid the first!!

i am from missouri, some shops check for extended damage to parts and some dont, like i took my car to one place that told me they had to replace the brakes cuz they were going out and the other place said i would need to exchange them but they are fine right now... i would guess that shop was doing that, trying to get you to change somehting that didnt need changed or did need changed but not yet... its not criminal unless they told you that it wouldnt pass inspection without it being changed... but the shop you took it to might have been skimping on the list and not checked everything, so if you tell on the shop that says it needs changed and get a lawyer involved then you can get the shop that passed you in trouble if they shouldnt have passed you... and then end up paying the $700 anyway

I would also go to a mechanic and see what they say about the $700 in repairs it needed, see if he says it does or not, who knows it might be a problem in the future, might want to sell the car and get out now before it leaves you stranded on the side of the road...

some places will try to rip you off, especially to women. some inspection stations are much more strict than others. the station i use only looks at the odometer reading. the best way to determine who is right in your situation is to get a third opinion.
