There are four possible answers to low grade temperature.
1. infection. The doctor should be able to discover the infection through blood tests. Once the infection is found, it can be treated with appropriate antibiotic.
2. inflammation. In inflammatory diseases, the inflammation might cause a low grade temperature. It is the body's own defense mechanism to cause the temperature.
3. Autonomic Nervouse System Dysfunction. Lupus can sometimes affect the ANS which controls the body temperature.
4. This just might be normal body temperature! Some people's body temperature is in the 97's, others in the 99's. For this reason, doctors sometimes do not consider it an elevated temperature until it is 100.5.

I don't think it means anything when you have a 97 degree temperature, considering that normal body temp is 98.

97 degrees means you are normal. Every person has a different body temp, some are a bit lower than the average. A lower than normal temp doesn't have anything to do with sickness.

You could have taken your temp in the am when you just woke up, you could have just had something cold to drink, it may be your "normal" body temp ( mine runs about 97.3) The 98.6 is just a "norm" all it means is that most people have this body temp, not eveyone. If you arent having any other symptoms with your low body temp, I wouldnt worry about it. If you are, go to a doctor and let him/her give you a physical.

that means you have a lower than average temperature. The normal temp for an adult is 98.6 F. But you arent ill, thats perfectly fine.
