Mess Cooking in the Navy. Probably one of the least fun jobs one can have at sea. I remember going through storms and heavy weather, washing trays and inserts in the scullery - or trying to get a pan of liquid jell-o 3 decks down to the reefer deck in rough seas. I will never forget the mess cook who spilled a pan of hot lima beans on the first classes, chiefs and 2nd class POs while trying to make it down a ladder from the galley. Hard staying clean and next to impossible to get enough sleep.

Cleaning the head was 1st and getting up at 5am to climb all over the ship taking magazine temps and still look good enough to pass inspection at muster was a pain. My ship had 23 magazines spread from the highest deck to the lowest with a different key for each and a card you have to initial in each magazine what a pain I'm just glad I wasn't on a battleship with god knows how many. The worst duty was being assigned to the galley for 2 weeks early to rise late to bed and endless work that sucked big time.

Bringing back the bodies has to be the worst (I feel for the soldier who said that, nothing comes even close.) For me, it was manning a machine gun position for 12 to 16 hour shifts in the pouring rain. Not only are you soaking wet but in warm climates you have the relentless mosquitos, bugs, snakes and spiders to contend with. In the cold climates, (again it always seemed to rain) it would be just above freezing (South Korea in November) and again your pulling 12 to 16 hour shifts manning the machine gun and you're covered in mud and freezing your butt off. I made it to the end of my tour and kicked A** when I had to so I've earned the right to gripe.

OIF 1 **** burning detail at the end of every day. Nothing like pouring kerosene over a big pile of human feces and lighting it on fire.

any detail that started life as someone else job.
Example, some how people were always shamming and then a detail would be formed to do the work that they didn't finish.
