How about we go with most recent instead...

Four days and 20 some miles into a cross country hiking trip through the White Mountains, my legs stopped cooperating when we were still 6 miles from anwhere. Basic, boring muscle fatigue... not the sort of thing that anything in the backpack is going to fix. The terrain was treacherous and I was terrifed of losing my balance and we had a lot of muddy slippery downhill in our immediate future, with no bail out.

As I sat down crying in frustration on the trail, we were passed by two gentleman travelling the other direction. Taking advantage of the fact that it was the Spring Equinox, they had started early that morning and had already covered more than 20 miles in that ONE day, and had already summited 7 peaks... The older gentleman was 72!

Talk about putting me to shame.

Of course, being me I turned it to my advantage as inspiration. In fact, I made the next hut more than an hour ahead of two of the other girls in my group.
