I am continually having people approach me and speak spanish, or asking me if I am here legally, I am not spanish, hispanic or any other south american race. I am a Native American. Should I go back to wearing my hair in braids and donning my buckskins so that people can tell the difference? What would you do if you were in my place and many people mistook you for a hispanic? I am proud of who and what I am. I dont like being percieved as a possible illegal immigrant. Can you relate?

Dukalink, should I carry my compound bow and quiver of arrows? Do you think they might "get it"?

If it bothers you, go ahead and wear a braid on the sides with beads and a feather. I think it looks sooo cool, anyway!! I think a good looking N.A. looks great with something that signifies his heritage and shows you are proud of it. I wear earrings that have little dreamcatchers, gemstones, silver feathers, beads, carved wooden designs, etc., all made by the Cherokee. Some of my clothing is made from material that has Native American designs in it and I make them myself. I love to look like am, and I AM very Cherokee. ~~Native Pride~~

B.A.R.B.A.R.A. --Actually Native Americans do not resemble Mexicans. Only our skin color is similar. Native American men areTALL and OHH so Handsome!! Elvis Presley was of Cherokee descent. Women swooned over him!! Mexican men are short and ugly. Oh, and our Native American men have about a billion more brain cells.

Yes, I can relate. However, what you are experiencing is the results of people needing to categorize any and everything. Even though I am predominantly black, you would not believe how many people walk up to me daily and ask me if I am Native American. My grandmother was Native American, and it does not bother me at all. I am proud of my heritage-all of it. You can choose to ignore these rude people or politely explain that you are an American!

Maybe just one small braid with beads and a colourful feather hanging down with it?

Actually, I guess from your perspective, we are ALL THE REST OF US the illegal immigrants?

As to the compound bow and arrows, you'd probably just end up killing a few, and then people would just say "What else can you expect from a drunken Indian!"

I think the braids and buckskins would have a certain cachet.

However, people shouldn't assume any individual is illegally here. The government needs to sort that out for us. It is their job.

People mistake me for hispanic constantly. I am approached all the time by people who speak spanish at me, or ask me if I'm Spanish.

What's really funny is that when I tell them I'm not, and I don't speak Spanish, they argue with me. They'll speak Spanish anyway, and tell me that I am Puerto Rican "or something".

What I am is a total mutt- and no parts hispanic, or Italian (also been called that, and argued with when I deny it.)

It doesn't really bother me- I'm just thankful that I'm not that ignorant myself.

my brother-in-law had the same thing. Well, he's from Guatamala (he's here legallly) and when we were out at dinner(my bf, sister and him) the white waitress started speaking in horrible spanish to him. She had asked him in spanish if he spoke english.

Well he turned to her and said, "uh yeah . . . " then she continued to say that he spoke great english and was amazed.

He's lived in the U.S. for 15 years!!!

He just looked at her like a classless, clueless, moron and let it go . . . but we didn't leave a tip b/c of her rudeness.

I noticed "Barbara" said that Natives look similar to Hispanics, (they wish). What a crock!! NAs are tall and good looking.

As your wife, I get a kick out of watching your reaction when that happens!! You are funny.

That just goes to prove that people are stereotyping. Having brown skin does not equal illegal or Mexican.
