No exageration, but, my son will be 2 the latter part of October. He can count to 12, but misses number 5, and understands the concept of counting(uses his finger to point to what he is counting, or will count on his fingers) I never really pushed this or anything, I would just in general everyonce in a while say , how many _____ are their, and count, usually only to four. He is also starting to sing the ABC song, but only knows half the letters. Is this really good, or average for this age?

Yeah, I also don't agree with really pushing things on your child. We learn through play, and I ask him questions about stuff we do, and then answer. It is sooo much fun, and I can't believe how much he has grown in just the last 6 months. Its like he went from baby to little boy overnight. I am just so proud and happy that he can really interact now, and I want to make the right choices for him. Thanks for the input.

my son is the same way. Every parenting technique is different, as long as you make sure not to push your child any farther than they can handle, then go for it. Also now is a great time to teach your child a second language if you chose to. My son is now three and he can speak english, and knows many spanish words and meanings. Children are most receptive to learning before they hit their sixth birthday. so encourage them but don't burn them out, make it a game!!!!!!!!

I would say he is in a sense advanced. Children have the ability to learn so much in the first few years; however so many parents do not bother to teach their children anything. My son turned two in April and he can count to twenty, knows his shapes, alphabet, and some of his colors. He amazes me with the things that he learns and how quickly he does. On the other hand, I have a four year old niece (by marriage) who does not know how to count to 5, only knows abc (the rest of the alphabet is just jumbled), and doesn't know what a shape is. She does know the lyrics to popular songs she hears on the radio. She's doesn't have a learning disability but her mother has never taught her anything. So my point is children around that age will learn and focus on with what you present to them, be it numbers and alphabets or rap songs and the latest dance moves. Additionally, I have been working with my niece this past summer. I never noticed how far behind she was because my son was a newborn when she should have been learning those things.

my son by the time he was 2 could count to 34, knew shapes and colors, abc's, had a 1700 word vocabulary and could count to 11 in spanish
How is his other language skills?
Im only being honest, if his other language skills are lacking then I would talk to your pediatrician about testing for delays.
My son could do all those things and we found out the reason he could was autism, autism sometimes mask as extreme intelligence. My son is very smart but he has mild autism.
Like I said im not trying to scare you, theres a whole check list of things for autism, not just the things I listed.
Im gonna link a checklist for you, BUT also keep in mind that half the things they say autism cant do like eye contact and cuddling is a myth cause my son does those things.
I hope you have the brightest star in the sky, he can sit right next to my bright star =)

It's advanced but I wouldn't take it as a foreshadowing of how he will be as a child and adult. My son knew that stuff at 18 months, but then lost interest and now at 2.5 he says it all wrong and makes up stuff. So if repeated enough any child will learn, they're not extraordinary or anything. Another thing, i know you don't push him but I noticed my husband pushing a little and I warned him that making him too knowledgable will not allow him to be challenged at school and I don't want that for my child.

This is not at all unusal for a child whos parents talk to him and work with him. My son was the same way. He is now 6 and we home school. But we've not really gotten into multiplication and division but he already knows it. He taught himself. I firmly believe children are smarter when their parents work with them and turn every opportunity into a learning game. But sadly I see many parents barely even talk to their kids. They just cart them around like objects. Or they underestimate them and talk down to them. It drives me crazy when people talk down to their kids.
It sounds like you're doing a wonderful job with your little guy. Keep up the good work! :)
