I haven't built one for myself, but have helped and advised several others in building theirs. The one I liked best was a double winger. It took him five years to get it finished - built in his basenment and garage! It flys like a gem, and gets lots of attention everywhere he goes!

Now as to the expense - it is going to depend on what kind you want to build,- also if you use all "new" parts, - or some "surplus" parts from other airplanes, and how much of it you are capable of doing yourself! I advise you to join EAA (experimental aircraft asscociation) club/chapter, - somewhere near you. You will then be with exp. builders, and will be able to get lots of helpful information, and most likely help on your project. Most "chapters" have one or more "club projects" going, - which you can get hands on experience from.

As for flying of the airplanes, IF you use the most meticilous workmanship, and get competent help form others, you will be real happy with what you get. An airplane is no place to be cutting corners (EVER).

There is a multi-million dollar industry in the United States today, selling home-built airplane plans and kits to people who think it would be "fun" to build their own airplane. A shockingly small percentage of these kits ever see completion and flight. No matter how enthusiastic they are at the start, most people just don't have the skills or the patience necessary to take such a complex project to its conclusion.

Unless you have the skills, the patience and the dedication to finish a project that could occupy all your free nights and weekends for the next several years, don't get started. It'll be cheaper in the long run to buy a used Cessna, Piper or other factory certified airplane.

Although I have not done it myself - I would not recommend anyone to fly in anything which I had built - I do know many people who have built their own aircraft.

It is impossible to give even an approximate time or cost, as all estimates seem to be exceeded by a huge amount. However, some of the more recent kits using composite materials seem to lead to shorter build times.

If you are in the UK, try contacting the Popular Flying Association. Their members will have an absolute mine of knowledge on every aspect of this.

In the USA, it is the Experimental Aircraft Association.

I hope this helps...
