More so, children need love. Older people should give as well as receive. Respect is a funny word and can mean different things to different people.Sometimes parents will do something a child may find disrespectful. But it was not meant disrespectful yet concerned.

I agree, but unfortunately they call the shots. If they are not giving you the respect you think they should give you, you should sit down and have a talk with them about it. If they just shine you on, then there isn't much you can do about it. Some older people are from the old school that a child should be seen and not heard. I was raised that way, and now, I talk my head off.

In my eyes respect is earned. The saying "respect your elders" doesn't mean anything to me at all. If an older person doesn't give me respect than they have no respect from me. Respect is a two way street.
A couple of weeks ago my boyfriend and I went swimming at a public pool early in the morning when it's all senior citizens. This man who was handicapped in a wheel chair had just gotten pulled out of the pool and put back in his chair while my boyfriend was in the men's locker room. They made small talk about swimming in the locker room and the man asks my boyfriend "Do you enjoy having all that sh*t in your face?" (Refering to my boyfriend's eyebrow and labret piercings) Than my boyfriend looks @ him and says "Do you enjoy being stuck in a chair for the rest of your life"
The guy was an jerk, and got what he deserved.

Respect IS a 2 way street, but the children do not have the maturity to make decisions on their own as to learning respect.. Respect is balanced by life experience and maturity. Respect is also taught not learned inherently.

I believe that some adults feel that children should 'respect their elders.' I teach kids that being respectful to everyone is a reflection on them and it earns them self-respect. I sure wish I could impress that upon the adults in this world.

i have worked with kids and have found that the attitudes of the kids have far more to do with their parents respect (or lack of) for others than anything that school can instill

so respect starts with the adults respecting and teaching respect to kids before the kids can learn to show respect

...age deserves respect, to an extent. social status dosn' t instantly give you respect. Respect is earned regardless of who you are, how old you are, or what war you served in. Though i respect soldiers for the fact that the fight for what they believe in, but i respect suicide bombers for the same reason, even if the are more radical.

I don't know. This is how I run our house rules. U want respect u show respect. But that is not always how it is.

You don't just get respect, you earn it - and older people have earned it just by being around for so long.
