If you really love dogs, you should go to a shelter and pick one, you'll be saving a life, and you'll have a bond with them. Plus, there are a variety of breeds at a shelter to choose from, your bound to be drawn to one lucky pooch. Not to mention, its cheaper and u will feel really good about giving the orphaned mutt a happy home. they also come pre-spayed or neutered and with current shots which saves lots of money.

this is a tough but great question.
u have to look at what kind of person U are and what u like
1. do u have a small house? then get a small dog
2. do u have a backyard?
3. do u like to exercise? some dogs NEED to be taken out for long walks, others just like it, others (like my yorkie) don't even want to be bothered with it
4. r u looking for a dog to warn and protect u?
5. do u mind barkers
6. do u have kids? some dogs dont do well with children, as children tend to pull on body parts and poke
7. how r u with grooming? do u have time for it? for example, Yorkies have long hair and they need constant baths and brushing,
8. how is your financial situation? can u care for a dog? r u willing to purchase pet insurance?
9. do u want a dog that just lays on the couch all day or would u prefer a more involved dog
answer all of these Q first and then find the right breed for u. also go to the book store, they have books on exactly the question U asked.

Okay this should be decided by your lifestyle. How much quality time you have to spend with your dog, certain breeds need more attention than others. ALso are you going to be able to brush it everyday if it has long hair? Do you like big or small, and most small breeds can be pretty hyper(jack russell), or do you want a calm dog, the breed you choose depends on you, if it fits your lifestyle. You have to consider it's needs, attention, exercise, grooming, also it's tempermant, personatlity, size, training ability and all the things that dogs require in order to have a happy life.

I have a yellow Labrador. Beautiful, friendly, well behaved... She is great with children, not a barker. She loves to eat! I feel that having a dog as a companion is a big responsibility. I think you need to have a yard where the dog can get out to but you also need to walk/run your dog at least once if not twice a day. You need to take time to train your dog properly and you need to be a strong enough person so that your dog knows you are in charge so it respects you and other people as well.

I would go to an animal shelter. You'll be saving a life if you adopt a dog. I know this sounds corny, but if you go to a shelter, let the dog pick you. I worked at an animal shelter once, and a lady came in with her two kids, and they had a specific type of dog in mind. They wanted a large active dog. But I knew that this little beagle mix we had would fit into their home and family well, so I asked them to let me show them another dog. I showed them the beagle, and they ended up adopting her. The lady called a few days later to thank me for showing her the other dog, because they loved her so much and she really fit into their family. Point being, sometimes it's best to just go take a look, and see who (meaning which dog) thinks they like you best! :)

"Because of each dog's characteristics and needs, and because each one is different, it is easy to determine which is appropriate for a family and which one isn't. But, basically a dog is a friendly and sociable animal that needs to live in a group and be clear about who is it's owner and that he needs to obey. Besides evaluating which dog or just breed of dog is right for you, remember that like every living being, he has daily requirements, not only not eating, sleeping and defecating, but also getting exercise, exploring new territories, playing and relating socially with other individuals of his own kind as well as with other humans. You have a choice in acquiring a pure breed or a mixed breed, but it's good to analyze these factors:
* The characteristics of each breed, be its size, coat and raising.
* Function that it was originally bred for be it guard dog, hunting dog, work dog, or companion dog.
* Natural behavior of the dog be it aggressiveness, it's capability to get trained, and it's exploratory conduct.
The physical characteristics, physiological and behavioral ones, vary depending on the sex of the dog. This will also help you decide if it's more convenient for you to acquire a male or female."

go to the AKC website and view different breeds to determine what pet is best for you. Also visit a local shelter, there are many wonderful dogs out there that need a loving home. Remember! Spay or neuter your dog to help keep the population of unwanted animals down!

I think you should search a pet website or ask a veterinarian or someone who knows a lot about animals or dogs and research about the dogs your deciding from. Maybe go on google and search for pictures of the dogs and see which one you think is cutest from a bunch of different dogs of the same breed. Hope this helped

AKC now also has the FSS program for rare breeds that are trying to establish a standard for induction into the AKC. If you want to get a specific breed you can always contact the breed rescue...contact info on this website too.
