Get a shelter mutt.
They really do make the best pets. You get a lot of "extras" for your money, and you are saving a life.
Good Luck

Labradors, Great Danes, and Rottweilers are fantastic, for the larger breeds anyway. I have a Labrador and a Great Dane now, and I've had two Rottweilers in the past and all have been excellent with children. If you're looking for something smaller....Basset Hounds and Corgis are great. I would stay away from any terriers, or larger herding dogs like border collies. Reason being those types of dogs require so much exercise and are on the go all the time. They might not be a great choice for someone that young. Keep in mind though that mixes make fantastic pets to. One of my favorite dogs I've ever had was a little Cocker Spaniel/Poodle Mix. I had her for 11 years. So, with that said keep an eye out at animals shelters for mixes, they need homes to, plus you'll be saving a life!! :) Also keep in mind that it all depends on how a dog is raised, and the training etc that is put in to it.

It depends in part on the 11 year old in question. You definately don't want a small dog though, especially not if the kid is active.
I always had mutts and 'rescue' dogs. And I always enjoyed playing with my grandparents' Saint Bernard. Collies are good dogs too, but like the Saint Bernards they will need to be brushed a lot to keep that long fur from getting knotted and matted.
Or you can try labs: Most of them are good-tempered.

I suppose it depends if they are going to be really wild with the dog. I read that young children who will be wild with dogs should definately not have a small dog because they can get hurt so easily but at age 11 I'm sure any dog would be fine. Just go to a pet store and you can usually tell which ones are the sweet ones and which ones are the tricky ones.

Pick up a good medium-sized "mutt" from your local shelter. Mixed breeds are usually free of any temperament or health problems associated with full breeds. A medium dog can rough house a little, but will not hurt your son. Some of the smartest dogs I have seen have been mixes, and by adopting from a shelter/pound, you'll be teaching your son to respect animals - you can't beat saving a life!

You should be looking for a family dog, taking into consideration what breeds are better suited for children. Suggest you talk to your local vet, if you are getting conflicting information from breeders and/or books.
Personally I have a black lab--- best dog ever and I've had several different breeds..... but to each their own.
Talk to your vet about the cost of health for a dog as well. Know what you are getting yourself into.

I got a golden retriever when I was 9 or 10, best dog ever! There's not enough space here for me to fully say how much she meant to me and my family. But really any dog would be good provided it's trained right.

It depends on what size dog you want really. To me, Newfoundlands are the best dogs ever for children and anyone inbetween. They require a fair amount of grooming (a good brushing every other day), but what dogs doesn't???? They are quite large, but beautifull. They love kids and are ever faithfull, and intelligent. Gentle giants.

bonsylar has it right, go with a shelter pup, they are the best dogs! I have had several shelter dogs and several pure breds and the shelter dogs are the smartest, most loyal dogs ever! They have such great personalities too! Go with a pup though so you can train and work with the dog.

You can research the breeds on the AKC site. You need to look at what is best for your family, not just an 11yo. Dogs are hard work. I've got two dogs, and one 12yo..he can't keep up with them.
