Golly, the reason is an old Catholic tradition that used to be on EVERY Friday, but nobody has said the reason Why for Friday, yet. Supposedly, Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday, and that is why the early Christians decided to set Friday aside as special by not eating any kind of meat on that day. Fish was not considered to be meat, so it was acceptable.
Otherwise, there would be nothing to eat but vegetables, fruit, eggs, and milk products.
The Protestants gave up the "no meat on Fridays" centuries ago, and the Catholics changed the rule to "only during Lent" (leading up to Easter) several decades ago.

It's a Catholic originated custom. Fish symbolizes Christianity--although Catholics long ago ceased to be Christians and became Mariolators. It was required to not eat meat on Friday until the rules were changed in the 50's. Imagine all the poor folks who went to hell for eating a steak on Friday before the rules were changed!!!!

My Dad was raised in the Catholic church, and there was a time when they ate fish/seafood on every Friday. In modern times after the 1950's-1960's it changed to eating fish on Fridays during lent. If you notice, even alot of restaurants with no religious affiliation serve it on Friday.

I think a lot of Catholics do it because of their religion- but i think that is at a certain time of the year. I like fish any day of the week- not just fridays.

It used to be a practise for Catholics to eat fish on friday. Today, most people just do it because it tastes good, and it makes a change from what they've been eating all week.

Well, 20 years ago, Catholics were only permitted to eat fish on fridays. You had to abstain from eating meat as a sacrafice. Now it is only done during Lent mostly. (The days leading up to Easter).

It's a Catholic tradition to fast on Fridays, which has evolved into just abstaining from red meat.
Even if your coworkers aren't Catholic, they may have grown up with this idea.

I used to do it during the Lent season since I'm Catholic but I don't really practice my religion anymore. But maybe it came from that. Who knows?
