That's a good question; one I've pondered from time to time. As a Christian, I believe in God and heaven, but I'm not exactly looking forward to death either...here's what came to me though, one day while I was at, of all places, an amusement park....
I have a fear of heights and a fear of speed; yet, I wanted to go on a respectable (but not too terrifying) roller coaster, just to say I'd done it and that I didn't let my fears get the best of me. So, I went on one which had the usual curves, hills, dark tunnels, etc. I think that death, and the fear of death, is like when you're going up a roller coaster hill--it's exciting, scary, and filled with anticipation, all in one small moment. As you reach the top of the hill (death), you hold on real tight, close your eyes, maybe say a prayer, and then have faith that the engineers (or God, in the case of life and death), knew what they were doing when they designed it and that after the big scary rush of going down the hill, you'd see that everything turned out okay and that you were safe and sound on the other side, feeling a sense of relief and peace.
For a totally different line of reasoning, one of the things that I worry most about is that when I die, my family will be left behind to mourn...though I believe that God will ultimately comfort them and help them to move on, it might also be considered a "fear", if you will, of dying.
So that's my two cents, for what it's worth. Hope it helps!

That is a very good question and one that many think of. People are afraid of the unknown because they have been taught the wrong message. Deep down inside, everyone,(most) wants to live forever as a perfect, happy, healthy human.
Guess what? The reason that we feel this way is because we were not supposed to die---even the scientists know that our cells keep being restored and they don't understand it either, (why we die).
That's why the Jehovah's Witnesses are here, to tell the truth to people and to save lives and bring all the glory to our Creator, Jehovah(Yahweh) God.
Oh, yes. The afterlife is the REAL life here on planet earth, not as many are taught to believe, in heaven. After God's Day, Armageddon!!
The earth was created to be inhabited, forever. It was not created for nothing.

Have you experienced going to another place you have no knowledge about? and if you have, how much do you know about the place you will be going? Supposing it is Las Vegas or Disney Land but you are not going there for relaxation or vacation but to live there permanently. No matter how good you hear about the place, isn't it that some how you will ask yourself what am I gonna do there or will i enjoy it there when I still have to make new friends? The anxiety actually could be more than that because as a dead person you wonder what kind of life it is and it is the unknown that you are afraid of.

Beacause some people are still afraid that there is no afterlife and others are afraid that if there is a hell, they might end up there instead of heaven.
Also the human mind fears the idea of non-existance and the mind turning to nothing after death.

God created us to live forever on a paradise earth and that is why death of loved ones hurts and the idea of dying is scary - it's NOT natural that we die.
If we all went to heaven or hell (by the way the doctrine of people burning in hell for all eternity isn't found in the bible - only a symbolic firey destruction in the sense that it is a complete death or final death for wicked ones.) why would a loving God allow us to feel PAIN if the "natural thing" is to be born, live, die and go to heaven???????

People are so afraid of death they turn to God and the afterlife. It is one way of giving "purpose" to life and as such represents the dilemna faced by an intelligent species trying to make sense of why they are here.

they don't know for certain that there is an afterlife, however strong your belief. You'd be pretty pissed to happily die and then find out it was all a big lie, you'd spend the rest of your death wishing you had tried to live

Our human sinful self fears death, because it knows there at least might be a judgement that follows that holds us accountable for our behaviour while living. Somewhere inside we all know we did some bad things. Also, most death hurts.... I don't want to hurt. :)

Once you dead your dead. Your body decompes. You exist no longer. You candle flame has been snuffed. I don't believe in afterlife. And from what I've heard the bible doesn't even promise a heaven. As so many will tell you.
This is just my personal opinion.
