Guinness is a great beer and is one of my favorites. However, different occassions call for different beers. Guinness is a sipping beer. Sometimes you want a gulping beer. I still like something such as Harp or Amstel better than most American beers though. Guiness is not just for me either! I have a friend who says as recently as in the 80s, doctors told pregnant women to drink a Guiness a day for vitamins and good carbs.
I don't know many southerners, but I always laugh when people in the midwest think Rolling Rock is a premium beer. My dad drank that stuff when I was a kid and he would tell you it is no premium beer!

Where I work we sell American beer and European beer. I have to admit, I prefer most of the latter. One of our best sellers is called Stella Artois from Belgium,it is a lager and pretty darn strong, in fact it's nick name is "Wife Beater"! I am a devoted fan of Guinness, they have actually done away with a common belief that it is full of calories recently and it contains about the same as most beers (sorry, can't remember the exact amount). Guinness is also fantastic to cook with, it makes a great Beef Casserole, Pot Pie and also when Roasting Beef pour in a little to the roasting dish at the beginning of cooking!

Guinness is ok, I actually like Newcastle better though. The beer made here in America can be good (Sam Adams), American beer might not be that good to you because it is made with the intent of trying to please everybody, so there is a lot less taste.

Ales are far superior to lagers once you try you will never go back! A few of my favourite ales: Caffreys, 80 Shilling, IPA, John Smiths.
The creamy head on Guinness is the best head on any beer but I prefer my ales for overall taste.

american 'macrobrew' as you are referring is generally looked down upon around the world. there are tons of amazing microbrews that are widley distributed across the US. Go to a bar with more than 5 beers on tap and try one you havent had before.
