I know what you mean, I think its mostly societies fault.
When I sparr with a girl, I'm at ends with myself, I want to hold back because I was taught since childhood not to hit girls, but I want to give it my all because I want to respect my opponent.

its always gonna be tough... the thing is , most guys are more physically active, and most guys want to "be the best"...no matter what they do. when a woman comes in and is better, a man feels as if the woman is taking over HIS role..which is why , at home, sometimes a woman has to "pretend", or let her man decide things on his own, even if she knows what is best. i hope that makes sense.... =T it's weird, it's a male vs female thing. its the opposite for girls.. if a guy came in and cooked better than me, i'd be so excited!! lol... but that is because women are not as intent on always being the "best" at something, its not in their nature to constantly beat people all the time....
anyways, long story short, i think u need to think of yourself as someone who is going Against stereotype. and if a guy says stuff like that, and underestimates you, guess what: he is GIVING you props..he is GIVING you the ability to beat him, because he underestimated you. in terms of the dojo, he should fight you JUST as he fights another opponent. and if u win, he should shake ur hand and do it gracefully, not say rude comments. it is something HE should change, not you. :) keep up the good work, and remember that u are competing at a man's level, but u are a woman. and u are going to get negativity about it.

The reason why girls are underestimated is because women can have babies. Anyone being that can have babies are often looked at as mothers or the soft one. Also included in being a women is that they are feminine, which is closely associated with weak. On the other hand, men cannot give birth to babies and are required work hard to support the women. This usually builds up their ego... you know where it goes. Pride gets in the way as ego builds up and they cannnot and WILL not let anyone they view as weaker than them beat them. If it happens so, down goes the ego and the trash talk comes....

Unfortunately, instructors can reinforce this. They may pair you up with other girls or boys they feel are equivalent in size. What most don't seem to see is belt rank plays a major factor in sparring ability. I consistently had to ask to spar higher ranks than my rank, and convince my instructor that I could and wanted to fight guys. Although you should respect all fellow students, do not let them tell you that you can't win. And if they underestimate you, you have the ADVANTAGE. Overconfidence will not help them. So continue fighting, and keep winning.

Girls shouldn't be understimated. I agree with your hatred toward sexual bias. The only people to beat me at national tournamnets ever were girls. And i'm not scared to say that because most guys wouldn't have the flexibility to sever almost every tendon and muscle in my arm by putting an upwards arm bar. i never gotten beaten bye boys. guys suck any ways there two narraow minded most the time especially when i was younger with them the girls were more open to getting helped the boys jsut kept going.

You're holding your own with boys now. As you grow older, that won't be the case. Case in point... Me and my sister both took Judo as kids. She is two years older than me and could beat me silly... then. Now, she's 5'10" and 130 lbs. I'm 6'2", 263lbs, faster and stronger than her. Muscles do end up making a difference. Still, she can do calculus and I can't.
Either way, enjoy the moment now. For 2 years a girl was the best baseball player on our little league team. Then the guys had their growth spirts and she played off the bench.

because they never spar with girls who can actually fight. I use to be sparring partner of a professional female kickboxer. I get beat up a lot everyday doing that. I also have sparred with one female pro boxing champion and she was only one of two person ever to knocked me out and only person to do with hands.
I'm sure if most guys got thrown in ring with one of those girls or someone like Erin Toughill or Debi Purcelli, they will be chewed up badly.

believe it or not, our school is more girls that guys, I think it's the kind heartd nature of our instructor.
I think guys are just more gung-ho so that they are more physical and work a little harder than most girls at getting better.
I know a bunch of girls that can kick most guys a$$ in tournament sparring, but when it comes to self defense stuff, it's a whole different story.

Deep down men fear women. Men fear your ability to reproduce. Men fear your advanced socialization skills. Men fear your ability to multi-task better. Men fear your longer life spans. Men fear your higher intelligence.
Men fear you so in order to control you they try to oppress and suppress you. This creates a sense of security for the male; they feel in control of the situation.
Since women are the more suppressed sex, men do not want to compete with them in a public manner for the ultimate reason of the stigma that comes with getting beat by a girl. At the point that this fear becomes a reality the losing male is then lowered in status with the witnessing males as a member of the “other” sex has just dominated him. The male ego is very fragile

At least you can fight guys at your tournaments. Where I am if you are over 13 they won't let you fight guys. (not that I'm complaining because I'm almost always guaranteed 1st). But I have to agree with you. It is not right that we are treated so differently. When I'm training in class they guys (there's only one other girl, who is about my age, at my dojo.) they just let me win. Which isn't good for me b/c then how am I supposed to ever get better?
Anyways, (wow I rambled on) to make a long story shortish its just another form of discrimination if you really think about it!

I'm sorry that happened. You are fighting history so that will be tough to overcome. Instead of worrying about it, you let them worry about it :) Let their overconfidence be their downfall and take them down.
Personally, I have trouble doing more than body positioning, blocks, and locks with women b/c I don't want to strike them... It is a problem I have in life. I was taught that it was wrong to strike a woman. I will spar but my effort isn't as good as it could be.
Typically the attacker in violent crimes is a man... another issue but I digress. Best of luck in your training.
