The receiver still derives the same benefit whether you felt compelled by your own charitible nature or your love of God.... so just do good whenever you can just because it is the right thing to do.

For now, do it because God says you should. As you seek Him and become closer to Him through prayer and worship, the Lord will reveal to you His nature and then you will do it out of the compassion that you have received from the Lord.
When you spend a lot of time with someone, you pick up things that they do. It is like that.

It doesn't matter. If you do charity out of compassion or for the Lord, it is both good.

For compassion. When you get home or go to work the next day, don't tell a soul what you did. If you can consistently do charitable work or give generously without a the need for a pat on the back, you're doing it for the right reason.

Best way is to not do it for god or for your own self concept. The hardest one to avoid is the latter; the 'spritual ego' can be very subtle. If we really had compassion, then this is the best place to come from. Otherwise, we have to watch for the concept of 'someone helping someone else' -- this concept of the self is the problem (e.g. helping someone because it makes us feel like we have a purpose, makes us feel humble, satisfies a goal of bonding with others).

Its good to do charity, period. If you truly love the Lord, He will give you both a passion to do His work and a compassion for others.

It isn't a matter of whether we do it of our own flesh or because God told us to. If you do it out of the flesh it becomes a work, which becomes a burden of man. If you do it cause the word of God says to do so, but you don't have the love of God in your heart, it also becomes a work.

Charity is the result of Love being in your heart. If you have Love then you have compassion. The result is that you seek to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Paul the apostle wrote, that we are to care for one anothers' burdens, and by so doing, we fulfill the love of Christ.
