You cook them separately, and only put them together when you serve it. If you're cooking a meat sauce, start it first -- for a simple one, mince onions, add herbs and garlic. Then add ground meat and cook it, crumbling it with a spatula. When the meat is all thoroughly browned, add crushed canned tomatoes. Stir, season (a little red wine is nice to add now), and turn it to the lowest setting and cover.
While that simmers, boil a large pot of water. When it's at a "rolling boil" (that is, boiling vigorously), add spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to package directions. (Be sure you get the noodles all the way under the surface of the water, you may have to "press" on them as they soften in the boiling water.)
When the past is done, drain it from the water and place it in a large serving bowl. (I like to toss a little good-quality extra virgin olive oil on the noodles once they're in the serving bowl.) Then pour the sauce over the spaghetti, toss to mix, and serve with grated parmesan cheese.

When cooking? Ummm cook noodles seperate from cooking sauce
When serving, I like to put the sauce in a seperate container because you dont know how much that person likes on their noodles...But usually the sauce goes on top of the noodles.

When I serve the meal initially, I put the sauce on top. However, when I put away left overs, I like to store noodles and sauce together. It tastes so good with the sauce soaked in. Spaghetti is definitely a meal that tastes better as left overs.

I cook and serve them seperately. When I eat spaghetti, I put the sauce on top of my noodles.

i cook my sauce separate from my noodles because they don't take long to cook for 1 thing. i let people serve themselves & all people i know put noodles first then sauce & off course cheese etc. on top . yes, i keep my sauce in a separate container. if it is not all eaten at the time of cooking then i put it all together & it is very good when reheated. i hope this answers your questions .

I prepare the sauce and the noodles in separate containers, strain the noodles, add butter for flavor and pour on the sauce...serve at once!
I also make home made sauce...nothing from a jar!

It depends if I'm doing a baked spaghetti (layered),
my grandmother's spaghetti (separate),
or my wife's spaghetti (drain the noodles after boiling, then put the noodles over the cooked sauce and toss together over low heat)

Any way you like it. I keep the sauce in a separate pan and pour the sauce over the noodles. It all tastes the same no matter how you eat it.
