Because it involves personal accountability and they would have to at least acknowlege their own lack of spiritual understanding and guidance

they are more offended by a fellow human being hateful enough (yes HATEFUL) to say such a thing, even it is based on their own christian belief.
at the end of the day, they dont believe they are going to hell- they dont believe in it! and because they reject society using the notion of a god (be it any religion's god) as a way to control large groups of people and expecting them to follow suit.
many atheist believe that people use religion as an emotional crutch to deal with the horrors of being mortal in a decidedly scientific world, be it a good or a bad thing. they dont understand why someone else need a reason the not be a bad person, they have decided to be good all on their own- without HAVING to have the threat of a deity sending them to an inferno.

Because they're being told that they DESERVE it. If I say "You're going to flarfton", you'd dismiss it as babble because "flarfton" doesn't carry with it the connotations and implications that "Hell" does. When you tell a person "you're going to Hell", it necessarily implies that there's a REASON, and that reason is never GOOD. You're saying to the person "you deserve to go to a very very bad place". It doesn't matter that the place doesn't exist... what matters is that the atheist is being devalued and insulted.
I'm sure that would offend ANYONE.

What offends me is that someone I don't know is telling me that I"m a bad human being based solely on the fact that I don't believe in God. You can't judge people like that. My disbelief in God doesn't make me any lesser of a person nor does it give anyone the right to damn me just because I'm different.

It is the spirit in which the statement is made which is intolerant and uncharitable. For a religion that supposedly teaches peace sometimes it isn't shown to others who don't believe in the same way.

It's important to understand that people made god into what they wanted him to be -- projecting all their negative thoughts and desire for justice, reward, punishment, revenge, etc. onto him. We still do this today. It's exactly the dynamic that Jesus tries to get across with the 'good' son in the prodigal son parable (the 'good' son doesn't understand God and wants god to what he thinks he should be). We use our god concepts to attack others -- and what better way than to make the ruler of the universe side with our negative and hateful thoughts of others?

Maybe because you presume to know their fate. I wasn't appointed God today, but sounds like you think you were. If you put yourself in their place, wouldn't you be offended? It is a threat, you know. The loving God that made them wouldn't threaten them. They have free will, just as you and I do. I also don't believe he wants us to threaten them, do you? Why don't you try talking about what you believe to your friends who are athiests? Non-judmental approaches work best.

Why when an atheist tells a Christian they are going to hell does a Christian protest "you don't even believe in hell"

If your God doesn't impose his/her will upon people, Why do you believe that you should?
I'm sure your God isn't very happy with you right now, Maybe he/she will send you to hell for being so arrogant as to think you know what will happen to anyone after they die.

Because its difficult to tell someone they are going to hell without it sounding like a threat. Saying that to someone suggests that you intend to put them there.

You answered your own question. They get offended because you are pushing your beliefs of hell and afterlife on them. Don't you get offended when they tell you there is no heaven or hell?
