Being good for fear of retribution is for children who are not mature enough to be good for its own sake. When we grow up, being good for its own sake is sufficient.

This need not be in this category.

Being GOOD is as much a process for US as it is for what is achieved in sharing it.

I offer this disclaimer however... "No kindness goes unpunished."

The issue of being GOOD should never be undertaken for selfish gain, but just cuz it's the RIGHT way.

FEAR need not be an issue either, if you live according to value judgements and moral assertions that are valid.

Many organized religions happen to teach FEAR, and its consequences,,,but come on,,,really,,, do you follow what seems a constant threat, as a belief system?

If you do, or act, according to what you believe is GOOD/RIGHT, you may still endure consequences that at the very least, confuse you, and demand that you ask,,,"WHY" or "WHY ME", but Life isn't a skate...it's more a test, and we may never know if we pass or fail, but we shouldn't live it, in the thory that failure is imminent, or a constant.

'Fear of consequences' sounds as coward; 'goodness sake' seems vague.
Perhaps, man should be good because God creates him good. To know God and goodness, man has to observe the teachings in the Sacred Scriptures of the Messenger of the One True God for his time.

Good for fear of consequences. That's why I'm good, and it pays off well because that'll keep you better for longer.

Being good for no other reason that because you'd like to be is the best way. Being good because you fear the alternative or because you expect a reward is inherently meaningless.
