Depression has nothing to do with psychology; it is rather described as a mental disease.

In order to get a diagnosis you must ask yourself this questions.

(See links for further specification.)

Do you have frequent suffering of depression for no valid reason or because of a minor event? If so you might be suffering from a depression disorder. In this case antidepressants are beneficial.

Do you have violent mood swings? Periods where your mood is extremely high elevated, where you are inventive and others were you are depressed? If so, do you have multiple mood swings a day or is it rather spread over months (multiple in one year). In this case you might be suffering from bipolar disorder. In this case you need a mood stabilizer.

Other things which may prevent depression are a healthy diet with vitamins, good amount of sports and change of environment and activities.

In any case I would see a psychiatrist and ask further advice. I have been diagnosed recently with bipolar disorder. Now I have been taking Zyprexa for a while and my depression is completely gone. I do, however, still experience mixed states (elevated mood and agression), but I feel mentally much stronger.

Go do something for someone else, an elderly neighbour, a busy mum who could use a break, watch her kids for her for awhile.

Listen to some music that isn't sad and depressing as so much of the music is now.

Find a funny tape and listen to it ,Robin Williams works for me , Bill Cosby, early George Carlin. Watch something funny like I love Lucy, or Abbot and Costello or Laurel and Hardy or WC Fields and Mae West.

Go out for a walk and appreciate the outdoors for it's beauty .

Smile , say hello to people when you see them.

Try Valerian Root (herb) in GNC , but make sure to get 530 mg. It WILL help you. And don't be afraid to take more than 3 caps at once though a serving size is 3 caps (take 3 -4 caps first, then you can add one more)

If you have questions, e-mail me.

I hope you will feel better.

Talk to a honest friend like best friend, a teacher, your mom or dad, somebody you feel comfortable with. This might prevent you from going to suicidal mode, I had friends that were dpressed that their friends/someone they love died or heartbroken. Find someone there for you. You always have open arms, dont be afraid. Go find someone to talk to it really helps.
