My preschooler was diagnosed w/ pin worms and she and my husband have both now been treated to prevent further infection in the family. I am two months pregnant and was advised by my daughter's doctor not to take mebednizole (sp?). He was unsure of a safe alternative for pregnancy. I would like to take something to ensure I don't end up w/ this horrific condition and reinfect my family. I will consult my OB as well, but am not sure he'll have any idea what to prescribe...if anything.

You doctor will most likely not want to treat you for pin worm while you are pregnant or breast feeding, especially if they have not confirmed that you actually have pin worm. They will probably have to do an anal swab with sticky, clear tape (or a kit they provide you with) for three consecutive days. This will then be sent to a laboratory technician to look for pin worm eggs. If you do not have eggs, then there is no reason to treat you.

Your daughter and husband should be treated again in two weeks because mebendazole does not kill eggs, only adult worms. This second treatment will kill any worms that hatched after the first treatment.

It is possible that you do not have pinworms. Yes, it is contagious, but you may not have gotten them if you use good handwashing technique.

Certainly talk to your OB. Some medications not rcommended for pregnany can actually be used after the first trimester. If your OB has no idea what to prescribe, I bet that he has rescources available to find something.
