Christians, Atheists, Agnostics, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Wiccans, FSM followers and whoever else is out there: Does the distinct possibility that there is no point to all of this (our lives, our existence, individually and collectively) bother you at all? Also, If we knew for a certainty that things are completely random and there's nothing out there, then don't morals and values go out the window? Because what difference would it make? (I'm not saying that's how it is or should be, I'm agnostic, I just want to know what you think.)

Whether there is rhyme and reason to it or not, going against most generally accepted mrals and ethics tends to have bad consequenses, even if it's just that we feel bad afterwards. So no, I wouldn't through those out the window. yes, it's creepy to think that there's nothing out there, and no reason for this, but suppose that's the case... make your own reason. If there is no after, it doesn't have to survive you. Hope this helps.

Where does our conscience come from? Who made the distinction between good and evil.

Read Genesis - you will find it all there!

If things are completely random, how come all the organs in your body support each other in some way. Think about the intrinsic workings of your eye for example.

In order to have a design there has to be a designer.
In order to have a creation, there has to be a Creator.

Apart from these common sense issues, I like many people down through the centuries have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. People have claimed to have had miracles occur in their lives, can they all be wrong?

The evidence of Creation is all around you, just be still, and know that He is God!

I'd certainly want to be on the safe side. After all, it is obvious to most people that this universe is much too finely crafted, and so are we, to be the product of random chance. Everything made requires the maker. If you take a pile of construction materials and leave them there for eons, they will not construct themselves into a house! What 'brand' of religion is best? Thinkers have been pondering that one since before recorded history, and guess what? Nobody, and I mean nobody, can claim anything with absolute certainty except nobody gets out of here alive. Enjoying the speck of time we have on this planet seems the only sensible thing to do. Happy searching! G

I am an agnostic and skeptical Buddhist.

Morality is maintained not just as a prerequisite to some other worldly place, it is a primary function in the structure and function of society. To be ethical and have empathy for humanity as a whole need not be utilized as a tool for betterment of the individual.
My values and beliefs stand my own judgment, surely that should be the basis of any belief system...

Even if there is no point beyond this life, no, morals do not go out the window. We forget as we get wrapped up in questions of faith about the one thing no matter what we do leave behind, our children. Even if all our prayers, and everything else is in vain, we still have our children and the world left behind for them to live. If we forget our morals on the chance we might be wrong, we are only wishing hem and all furture generations harm. Id rather die and be wrong in a world where my children are safe, then to take the chance of saying forget this and die knowing what ever harm came to them is myfault for not having taught them better.
Blessed Be

lemondrop,
I'm so glad that I don't have to wonder. There's a lot that we do that does not matter in the whole scheme of things. Especially if there is an expectancy for something that we do to last through eternity. There are somethings that do, and I think most that don't. All I can do is trust God everyday. That's enough for me.

Morals? Values? What are those things compared to the love that God has for those that He has chosen?

So true, I get your thinking.

However, since there are universal behaviour that we could say are wrong, like torturing babies for fun, and universal behaviour that are good or right, like feeding the hungry, we can then conclude that right and wrong do exist. There is a system of what "ought to be" that is something that we strive for despite ourselves. So I do believe that there is a purpose for our existence.

But an atheist struggles with despair in this, because his own reasoning only points him to a place of him having no purpose, and he resists this because he knows that right and wrong does exist. He's angry... and always finds himself struggling and fighting against the existence of God.

I don't think there is any point to life, its completely meaningless. Why would that bother anyone? I don't see why people take satisfaction in their beliefs that their lives have purpose. As for morals, those have always been relative anyway. Morals are determined by general consensus.

There is within all of us the will of knowing good and evil.

No point in our existence? Who would want to pro-create if it was worthless?

Why would we spend money to search the vast amazing universe, the galaxies, the stars ?

No point in pets?

No need for the shade of a giant Oak tree?

No beauty in a snowflake or a babies smile?

No oceans, no mountains, no sunsets no smiles no tears of joy?

Count me out of a random world, without a Creator. I can't live in a world without love and the colors of creation.

Count me out if there are no morals or values either, that would be a world with more evil then we can even imagine.

Count me out if there are no mysteries and no spirituality. It would be the saddest world one can imagine.

Count me as one who is happy to be in this world, such as it is.
Count me blessed as one who believes in Creator GOD
Count me crazy if you want, I know the King of Kings is coming again for me.

It makes a good deal of difference to our descendants. You've nothing to lose by doing everything possible to leave a heritage of peace for your children. Morals and ethics are our directions for making the best choices. It's what differentiates us from animals.

Perhaps eternal life is through our children...
