I have done this. I still have ties to my family, but I feel more connected to the family that I have chosen. My closest brother isn't either of my siblings, but an Irishman who honored me by inviting me to be Best Man at his wedding. His family in Donegal is like my extended family. And though I never had a sister born of my natural mother, I have one now. When my fiance was ill many years ago, I grew very close to her family in London. And when she died, having to leave her mother and sister behind and return to New York was one of the hardest things I've done. In many ways, I am closer to her mother than I ever will be with my own. And her sister's children are my favorite niece and nephew, though there's no blood connection.

Yes. I would rather have my ex's family than mine. My brother used to beat me quite badly and they would always come and get me out of there. They new my Father wouldn't do anything because he used to think it was my fault and that I started it. They were a great family. Their father just died a few months ago and I have lost contact with them. They were the best group of guys ever. I love them and miss them dearly.

Much of my family is deceased, and I wouldn't choose anyone over them for any reason. The ones I have left are not geographically close, and I wouldn't trade most of them. My ex-inlaws are my next closest family, and I wouldn't trade them away either. The same goes for my good friends, and my circle of Yahoo buddies, all of which I consider family.

Sometimes I wish I could but I've learned that "that's life" so I've learned to deal with it. Your family is your family. No changing that.

My family's nuts. I might have chosen to start out with another one, but I wouldn't trade them in now, they're mine.
