A friend of mine is using laxatives to lose weight. Is that healthy? She still eats and all, but she says she just wants to eat healthier and lose weight by "helping along her digestive system"...Is that ok?

No it's not OK! She will cause herself to have any electrolyte imbalance which can cause leg cramps or even cardiac arrest (heart attack)! Best case scenario is she will slow down the natural ability for the colon to function and will have to take laxatives for the rest of her life in order to go to the bathroom. Tell her this is bulimic behavior just as much as throwing up. She needs to stop now and seek professional advice if she can't stop this behavior on her own.

Absolutely not! The use of laxatives as a weight loss method, is not good. Addiction to laxatives can occur, and the body adapts quickly.

It's pretty dangerous, she can really screw up her digestive system. I'm not a doctor, but she should definitely talk to a doc about what she is doing, they can give her the gory details. It's REALLY bad.

Nope, she's just losing water, not fat. PLus she'll balloon up once she drinks a glass of water.

she will get a disease called
melanosis coli
her whole gut will become as black as hair...
which will be followed by lots of gi troubles
