I got two kittens, five weeks ago, they're four and a half months old now, brother and sister. I just realised the other day that the female hasn't made a single noise since I got her. Her brother meows all the time. She meows with her mouth, but no sound comes out. Is it just because she's young, or is it possible she can't make any noise? I will go to the vet with her, but just wanted other opinions. Thanks in advance.

Years ago I had a cat, Prudence, who could only ever produce the tiniest squeak and sometimes not even that! She lived to a ripe old age - 17 - and was healthy in every other way. The vet couldn't really explain why she was like that but I think you are definitely doing the sensible thing in getting yours checked out, especially as she is still very young. Good luck!

Yeah, I've had a cat that didn't meow. She'd move her mouth, but no sound came out. Other than that, she was OK. (She COULD meow loud, but she just didn't.) I think your cat is fine. But you should ask a vet, just in case.
Even though having a cat with a loud meow can be annoying, it can help them when they get trapped. Cats like to get into places they don't belong. One of my teachers' cats got stuck into the dryer as a kitten. Luckily, she heard the cat's meows and got it out. The only real damage it suffered was singed ear hairs.

My one kitty was exactly the same when she was a baby! It was so weird, she just made this little "cough" when she opened her mouth. We took her to the vet, and the vet checked her out but no illness or problem she could determine.
I don't know what age she suddenly started doing it, but now she meows fine! In fact, of the two she is the chatterbox--meowing and mewing and chirping all the time.
It wouldn't hurt to get your kitty checked by the vet, but don't worry if she doesn't start meowing until she's older. I don't know what causes it, but it apparently happens!

It's completely possible and there's probably nothing wrong with her. It won't hurt to mention it to the vet next time you are in there and he'll probably feel around her neck to make sure there isn't something physical creating the issue.

My cat meowed like crazy until we got another cat who meowed more and louder than I thought possible. The first cat simply shut up. It was like the second cat used up all the meows and the first cat had nothing left to say that hadn't already been covered. When the meower died, the first cat started meowing again - like first kitty got his allotment back. : )

Yes it is possible, but it's really a blessing!! I wish my cat could not meow. My sister has a male cat that cannot meow, it has gotten him into just a little trouble a couple of times. like getting locked in a closet, once he got shut in the dryer. I don't think it's anything to worry about though. I wouldn't waste your money on taking her to the vet.

We have a cat that doesn't meow either, and after a lot of research have discovered there's nothing medically wrong. She does respond with an airy sound, followed by a squeak or peep sound. It's interesting to live with, especially since we've always had regular meowing cats.

I don't think it is something to rush off to the vet to find out. I have a cat that whines or has chirpy conversations with me, no meows. Two other cats have had touches of laryngitis for a few days and then their meows came back.

It is possible to have a cat that can't meow. Just like people, sometimes their "voice box" doesn't function properly.

However, it is most likely not meowing because it is young or it has upper-respiratory problems. I would wait until it is fully grown to be sure.

The best thing to do is see a veterinarian.

Your kitten could be dehydrated and have a blockage.
Get some vaseline and feed it to her. It's safe and it will cause her to poop. (Only a small amount is needed, on the tip of your finger)
This should make her go and she will drink more after this because when cats aren't able to poop they won't drink well.
Consult a vet though, because I am not a vet just a catowner who's experinced the same symptoms.
