Excellent - you are learning the intricacies of logic.
In philosophy there is something called Occam's Razor. It is the principal that the simplest answer is best. In this case it would be simply that elephants recognize and mourn the loss of a relationship.
There is no bridge/evidence in other elephants' mourning of a dead elephant's soul etc.

ALL animals have souls. ALL animals will be in heaven.
Animals as well as humans have souls. The soul means the person or animal themselves. Animals will go to heaven, Not through salvation. Animals souls don't need redemption. Animals never sinned. Man did, Man needs a redeemer. Jesus Christ.
Gen. 1:20, 21, 24, 25: “God went on to say: ‘Let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls* . . . ’ And God proceeded to create the great sea monsters and every living soul that moves about, which the waters swarmed forth according to their kinds, and every winged flying creature according to its kind. . . . And God went on to say: ‘Let the earth put forth living souls according to their kinds . . . ’ And God proceeded to make the wild beast of the earth according to its kind and the domestic animal according to its kind and every moving animal of the ground according to its kind.” (*In Hebrew the word here is ne'phesh. Ro reads “soul.” Some translations use the rendering “creature[s].”)

God writes the genetic code for creation
up to the point that water shows up.
After that, each species writes it's own
code.
There is no heaven or hell.
There is a judgement. However, that
judgement does not take place when we die.
That judgement takes place every time we
show up.
All creatures show up in a genetic situation
that they help write.

I believe that all Gods creatures have souls. I am not sure if they go to heaven or hell, but I would like to believe that they do. I have had some very wonderful dogs and cats, That I would really hope to see again in heaven. And there are many animals that have done heroic deeds. So I guess I do believe that they go to heaven ot hell.

All beings have a spirit and therefore mourn their losses.
Why must christians always assume that the fictional places of heaven and hell is a final destination?

I've always believed that animals have souls. I'm not so sure you can PROVE it though. Just like you can't really PROVE that people have souls. (Sometimes I wonder about some people!)
You just have to believe... or not.

No it means they have a behavior that imitates what we call grieving. The number of elephants has trippled in recent years.
Look it up.
