I've tried installing Sims 2 on my laptop several times, and every time I do, the install program freezes when I put in the second disc. There are no scratches that I can see that would affect the install. The copy I have has already been registered on another computer (didn't have my laptop at the time), but I'm not planning to register it anyway.

I have a Dell Inspiron ME051 with an Intel Celeron M 1.40GHz processor and 248 MB of ram, everything is factory basics.

What do I need to do in order to be able to install it successfully?

Do you meet the system requirements? It looks like you are short on RAM. You need 256 MB for Sims 2. Are you sure it's not 256 MB of RAM that you have? Also, do you have 3.5 GB of hard drive space? If that's not the problem it may be your graphics card (incompatibility or else you need to update your graphics card's drivers...see below for details/links)

Here are the system requirements from the Sims 2 home page:

If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM then you need at least:

800 MHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space

If you have a non-T&L capable video card (an Intel Extreme Graphics or a Radeon 7000/VE Series) then you need at least:

2.0 GHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space

Get the most current driver for your video card. The manufacturers usually have the video drivers on their sites for you to download. Visit the nVidia site (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp ), the ATI site (http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html ) or the support site for your computer's manufacturer for the latest drivers for those video cards.

Supported video cards (and the more video memory the better):

ATI RadeonTM series (7000 or better)
Radeon 7000/VE series (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
7200, 7500
8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
X300, X600, X800

Nvidia® QuadroTM series
Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

Nvidia® Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)
GeForce2
GeForce3, 3 Ti
GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
GeForce 6600, 6800

Intel® Extreme Graphics (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
82845, 82865, 82915

If all the hardware names and requirements sound bewildering, the easy thing to do is run the system requirements TEST on your machine. If you have a lot of red marks, you'd probably save money getting a new machine rather than upgrading. If there's mostly green marks on the test, then concentrate on fixing the red ones.

In the black box, pick The Sims 2 - or the version in question

Your specs sound a little slow for Sims 2. What video card does you laptop have? I'd be willing to bet that its not up to spec, and won't play the Sims2 even if you manage to get it to install.

Probable because you dont have enough memory on your laptop expecially if you have other things installed to.
