I think when you pay for dating sites, you'll find more serious people and I guess that's what you're looking for. Creeps with wrong intentions might not want to pay all the fees to the site. I guess they want to protect you from those creeps as well. I found my fiance on line, so it can happen en good too!! ;)

lavalife.com is free. Free profile, but you have to buy credits to interact.
Below is the review of Lavalife and the website for lavalife. I don' know any other free ones, that you don't have to pay for profiles or credits.
