I think it is interesting that so far the answers that say "yes" have many that include book, chapter, and verse. The ones that have answered "no" do not.
Some say it is just a sign and has nothing to do with salvation. Where does the Bible say that?
What I read in the Bible is that we are burried with Christ in baptism and we "rise to walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:3-4, Galatians 3:27, Colossians 2:12) We must be born again to be saved. This new life occurs at baptism.
Jesus said, "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16:16)
This is not what some of the answers to this question have said. Some have said that you believe and are saved, then you shall be baptized.
This is not what Jesus said. It is not in the same order.
What would Jesus have said if he had meant, "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved"?
I believe he said what he meant and meant what he said! I believe Jesus! "He that believes not shall be damned!" (Mark 16:16)
(Every example of a conversion in the Bible after this point in time specifically mentions baptism.)
How can you believe in Jesus if you won't believe his words? I believe Jesus! Who do you believe?

The act of Baptism does not make you a Christian. IT is a picture of death to sin and the new birth in Christ. We as Baptists baptize because Jesus thought it important enough to be baptized. WWJD? Well this is what He did and this is why we do it. It is not an initiation into the church or the Church family. It is just a picture of what happened in your heart sometime before you were baptized.

That is what they normally say and we were taught that when Jesus died, people's sin have been forgiven. The question now remains why do we still have to be baptized for removal of the original sin if that has been erased a long time ago. Is there a new sin after Jesus' death? or is it just a reason for continued effort to support the church financing aside from money taken through.... first communion, confirmations, weddings, renewal of vows, death, weekly or daily contributions during services, school operations, bingo and raffle games and total tax exemptions.

Jesus was a Jew, not a Christian -- but, his teaching did come to be Christianity.... and what Baptism represents is different for a Baptist, a Catholic, a Lutheran.... you might be Baptised as a Baby... or choose to do it as an adult.... check out this book: Living Water: Baptism as a way of life by Klara Tammany.

Baptism is simply an outward expression of what has happened inwardly---if we have trusted Christ as Savior. Baptism is important because Christ commanded it; but there is no magic in the water.
We can never be saved because of what we do; we can only be saved because of what Jesus Christ has already done for us. Let me explain.
Our greatest problem can be put in one word: sin. Sin cuts us off from God, and sin also keeps us out of heaven. But how can we get rid of our sins? We can't erase them or cause them to disappear by ourselves; we don't have the power. The only way we can get rid of our sins is for someone to come along and take them away for us.
And that is exactly what Jesus Christ did for us. We are weighed down by the burden of our sins—but Jesus took that burden upon Himself when He died on the cross for us. To put it another way, He took the punishment we deserve when He went to the cross in our place. The Bible says, "For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God" (1 Peter 3:18).
What must you do? Simply believe that Christ has taken away your sins, and then receive Him into your heart and life. The Bible's promise is for you: "To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). Become God's child today by asking Christ to come into your life.

Of course. Nothing wrong with your own answer to the question, but it doesn't answer the question. Different churches have different beliefs as to WHEN a person must be baptized, while some don't see it as a necessity.

Amen. Now all you need is the fullness of the Spirit to really kick your Christian life into gear.

spiritual baptism occurs at conversion and at that point you recieve the holy spirit. baptism with water is just a symbol of this and a testimony to others, not God, that we believe in Jesus.
