I've wondered this a lot. I don't know why you posted it in R&S, but anyway, I don't believe what I'm reading, but still somehow deal with these biological reactions to the heebie-jeebies.

The response you refer to is called 'pylo-erection' ! It also makes the hair stand up on our arms. It is part of our brains response system that dates back to the earliest humans. (Other mammals still display the reaction noticeably.) Watch a cat or dog! It is all part of our 'fight-or-flight' response to outside stimuli.
