His MISSION was to boldy go where no MAN has gone before.

Firstly Kirk was never very good at following orders.

Secondly this was his main mission. He was often sent on side missions by Starfleet.

Finally as has been pointed out by others his mission is to be the first man to be officially sent to seduce the hot green babes of Talus 7. The hot green babes of Talus 7 didn't go there before him. They were already there waiting to seduce Kirk and kill off a few red shirts along the way.

On a more serious note, it was mentioned in a Next generation episode that the reason most intelligent species are humanoid is because an old parent race seeded the primordial soups on hundreds of planets, because they were dying out and wanted intelligent life to continue in the universe.

He used to boldly go ( and split the infinitive whilst doing so) WHERE no one had gone before, but that didn't stop him meeting creatures that had never seen HUMANS before!

Often wondered that myself, also , why is it that any aliens he meets always look like humans? 2 legs, 2 eyes, nose in the same place, mouth same as ours and they always speak english!

for those who pointed out that he said MAN, in one of the films he actually changes it to "no one"...so the person asking the question has a point.
