I am in the process of adopting a dog (small pug mix) and finding a new place to live at the same time (ton of fun, I know). I was given a recommendation to look into pet insurance that also covers damage to the place I rent. I found a company called PetCare Insurance - it is $17/month, with a $75 deductible. It covers all sorts of accidents and illnesses, as well as $700 damage to the apartment/house.

Has anyone gotten insurance like this? Is it worth it, or is it a scam? Have you heard of PetCare Insurance, or is there another one you would recommend? Thanks

I'm not laughing Sean, Oprah is fabulous! I definitely cannot spend thousands of dollars on pet surgery...but I can afford $17 bucks a month as a security blanket. The house coverage is pretty cool too, I think...especially if we have housetraining issues...eeeew.

We love our pet insurance policy with Pets Best. I had never heard of the renter's insurance part so went to PetCare and thought it was nice that they offered something like that.

Trying to get a quote, though, they told me that it would be $14/mo. just for the renter's insurance (and "selected" accidents). I tried adding an illness coverage and couldn't figure out how to quickly do it, but the prices seemed quite a bit higher than what we pay for what seems to be better coverage.

I'd check into what's covered under your renter's insurance policy (if you have one), save the $17/month and put it toward a good pet health & accident plan without limits.

I've heard on Oprah (yes, Oprah, I watch her, laugh if you will) that pet insurance is a scam but from my personal experience through friends it appears to be worth it. Friends of mine spent $4,000 for their dog to have surgery after he swallowed a toy -- if you can't afford $4,000 at any given time, it's sad to put your baby down just because you can't give him what you need. I would recommend the insurance (but definitely read the fine print).

If you can, skip the part that pays for damage to the house or apartment. How much damage can a pug do?

I am somewhat familiar with this company. Pet insurance is an EXCELLENT idea, especially if you get coverage for your apartment, too! We have several clients that have pet insurance and, as long as you use it, it's worth it. I have and lot more experience with VPI, but I don't think they have coverage for damages. You can look into renter's insurance, though.

I have never heard of them. You can always ask the landlord what the "extra" deposit would be for a pet. Some prices run around 150-200 dollars. If all is good when u move then u should get your deposit back.
Good luck
