To bury the body (without embalming),
within 24 hours of death (or before sundown of the death day?)
in a plain, unvarnished, unadorned casket???

Why is this so? and . . .is a Jewish cemetery preferred?
Is cremation allowed?

Thank you - for sharing this information . . .

Like anything in Judaism, there are strict rules and costumes for burial too.

In most of the cases (not all!) the body must be buried before the next day and must not "stay for the night" ("Halanah"), according to Deuteronomy 21:22-23.
The traditional Jewish burial does no include a casket at all, but this is a new costumary (in Israel, religous Jews are buried without a casket, so there will be nothing in between them and the earth). And generally, everything in the burial should be as plain as possible- the ceremony itself as well as the "Tachrichim", the linen clothing of the deseaced.

A Jewish cemetery is must and cremation is not allowed. Genesis 3:19 says "Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return", so burial is required. Another reason for that is that during the eschatology the Messiah will come, raise the deceased and give them life. A creamted person won't be able to enjoy this time of the Messiah.

cremation is not allowed. orthodox jews believe the bodies of the dead will be resurrected in the far afterlife... so permanently destroying the body in its entirety is a huge no-no. where would the soul go? also, there is a biblical verse where G-d tells Adam: "For you are dust, and to the dust you will return." There is also the verse which applies, "The dust shall return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to G-d who gave it." These are verses from which a large part of jewish view on the afterlife derive.

And yes, jewish law does not allow embalming, for a few reasons, ie the body is sacred and should not be fiddled with, and because it delays the body's natural decomposition and as above, the body is supposed to naturally return to dust and the soul to G-d.

and of course for the same reasons, jews should be buried within 24 hours. since viewings of the body arent allowed (the body is sacred and should not be ogled), and embalming is not allowed, this is pretty easy to do.

Orthodox and most conservative Jews do not approve of cremation. More liberal, or reformed Jews sometimes practice it. Since traditionally Jews did not approve of any form of preservation of the body (embalming) quick burial was a practical necessity, especially in hot climates. They disapprove of preserving the body, because of the biblical pronouncement "for dust thou art and unto dust thou shall return". The plain casket follows from the belief that ostentation and "show" are out of place at a funeral.

I'm not Jewish but I'm almost certain that cremation is NOT allowed since Jewish people consider their body their temple or synagogue (I'm not sure about the wording but you get the point).

We bury people in simple attire for two reasons. one is that we want the body to decompose quickly. two, it highlights the awareness that "naked you came forth and naked you shall return". Your riches don't matter much once you're dead, only your good deeds.
cremation is not allowed. I'm not exactly sure why.
