I see a lot of VA plates heading north and I see a lot of NY plates heading south. Lots of former NY people settle in the DC metro area and many of them travel north each weekend or so.

I have traveled "to" "New" York, but I have no idea what a VA is or if I've ever traveled in one.

Well, do you mean New York? And I don't think there is a New York in Virginia.

NY plates are from New York
VA plates are from Virginia, so 2 different states.
