In an infant? Different blood types between the mother and the newly born. (they put them under a lamp). In adults it could mean a number of things:
- Unusually large bile duct obstruction, eg stone in common bile duct, tumour obstructing common bile duct etc.
- Severe liver failure with cirrhosis.
- Severe hepatitis.
- Crigler-Najjar syndrome
- Dubin-Johnson syndrome

liver and/or kidney disease. liver diseases such as hepatitis c, b and other diseases that may be hereditary can cause an issue with the bilirubin levels.
