You want to take sore throat losenges with benzocaine or lidocaine. If you go to the doctor's, ask for a viscous lidocaine solution prescription. Motrin may also work for a sore throat.
About 1/2 of colds will disappear if you take zinc (zicam and cold eeze) as the cold is coming on. The other cold virus doesn't seem to respond to zinc.
For coughs, prescription codeine works well at night. The only other cough syrup that works well is Cough Free by Heel. All of the others have a low effectiveness rating on the Internet, but some may work for you. Theobromine, an ingredient found in cocoa or chocolate has been recently tested as effective, but more research needs to be done. For now though, you could eat a batch of Brownies and see if your cough lessens after an hour or so.

Don't overload on medicine
The best thing to do is drink LOTS of water and rest. Also have some warm tea and eat very healtily. Most colds last from on week to one and 1/2 weeks, and there's not much you can do about it. But DON'T take to much medicine. That's really bad and helps to knock out your imune system to naturally get over the cold!
Hope that helps!

if Dayquil and Nyquil aren't helping, you can try hot tea with honey to sooth your throat, of course chicken soup and such. Sudafed as a decongestant to clear up your sinuses.
But if the pain is very bad - you could have a sinus infection, which will NOT go away on its own, or you could have strep throat which will get MUCH MUCH worse if you don't see a doctor and get some antibiotics.

You should go to the doctor if you have had a sore throat for a couple of days it is probably strep. But anyways just get some really good cough drops that are strong and that helps.

Cold medicine only covers the symptoms. Try gargeling salt water, or Listerine (or strong antiseptic mouthwash). These will actually kill the germs that are causing your sore throat. Also make sure you're eating yogurt - it helps your body replace the natural good fighting bacteria.

Gargle with salt water that's as hot as you can stand and a little bit on the salty side or drink a mixture of a crushed vitamin C tablet, crushed asprin and warm water. The second one doesn't taste good, but it works!

Eat soda crackers. It's true. The salt does its thing like gargling with salt water and the cracker scrapes the mucus, which is what is the irritant, from your throat.
Good luck

Nyquil always works for me. As far as the sore throat, try gargling with warm salt water. It will releive the pain for a while.
