Everywhere he starts digging, put cayenne pepper in that spot. He won't dig there again once he gets a snoot full. I had to do it for my dogs.

Digging is a normal and fun behavior for dogs, so it will be really hard to break. Dogs dig for a couple of reasons to bury things they want to save for later, to find a cool spot or a lot of times because they are bored. Try giving him something to do, and make sure the dogs gets enough exercise and attention. Dogs behave a lot better when they have enough exercise they less restless. You can also try giving your dog a place to dig. I know of a couple of owners who tried and tried to break the habit but always failed so they got their dog a sand box and encouraged the dog to dig there. Bury some toys in the sand box and make a big deal that he digs there, even play with him when he is doing it. If you catch him else where verbally discourage it and bring him back to the sand box and praise him there. Natural habits area to break, so at times it is easier to alter them.

its a matter of staying on top of the obedience.. if you see your dog digging.. immediately go out and tell the dog "NO" . I also put my dog on "time out", she has to lie down for a few minutes.. this has to be done right when the dog is caught digging, not hours later, they will not have a clue as to what you are talking about.. short memory.. as for the holes that are already dug.. i have found a little trick.. put some of their poop in it and cover it up.. i have never had a dog dig in the same place.. good luck

Sometimes dogs dig to make a cooler spot to lay at. Some do it cause they are bored. Make sure he has a cool place to lay...www.valleyvet.com has wonderful beds for dogs that can be cooled by damping and are easily cleaned. Also...allow chew toys to keep him occupied. Cow hooves are excellent for the dogs teeth and gums and last quit awhile and cures the boredom. Make sure the length of the chain allows for adequate movement and doesnt ad to frustration of limited space which is causing digging. Hope this helps. It is a natural habit for dogs to dig though.

Really and truthfully a dog is going to be a dog and will do things that will make you angry but, teach him that it's not okay to dig in the yard by saying, " Bad Doggy"! Really get angry and mean it dogs can sense when your'e not serious about it. Yell if you have to pretty soon they will know what's right and what's not okay to do.

DOG POO works
First of all your dog is bored... Try to lessen the time he is outside alone. If you live in a hott area like florida, he may be hott and he is digging to get to the cool dirt!!
When you catch him in the act, a nice firm "NO." Take his own feces and place it not to deep in that hole and cover it up. Do it in every hole. When he diggs it up he will find an unpleasent surprise!! After a few holes he will stop!

He's bored,

Find some more stuff for him to do.
It may also be a breed thing...

Is the dog a breed that is accustomed to hunting??

Get a couple yard toys for him.

Your dog is bored. Take it for walks everyday or to a dog park and socialize it. It will thank you later.
