Religons are the status quo's way of controling the populace by answering the two issues that have plagued mankind for sometime: Morality and Mortality.
Because those who would rule capitalized on that need for answers, religons were put in place to guide people in away that fit the powers that be by offering justice for the wicked and salvation for the rightous.
A world with no religon is a world free to think how it wants as opposed to thinking what it is told too. People would be smarter, more educated, more accepting, and things like war, greed, and malevolence would be seen at the source. Some people are just greedy war mongering deviants.
Think about it. Your more secularist societys are also your most peaceful (Netherlands, Switzerland) while your most pious are the most violent (America, Middle East)

Personally I don't see it that way. The increase of violent crime is not necessarily tied to a decline in religions. In fact much of violence throughout history (crusades, fanatics, holy wars) were all perpetrated because of religion.
If there were none, then people wouldn't believe in an afterlife and would be more willing to value the short time that we have here on Earth.
Read Frans De Waal's "Good Natured" for a look at how morality can arise in non-theistic settings.

Well, first it would stop war? All those other things religious people do worst than atheists. Muslims are raping the kids in Africa so religion doesn't stop rape, war that's murder.
Most wars are fought over religion. Adultery most men profess to be Christians and most men are unfaithful to their wives.
Most marriages in this state break up over an adulterous relationship. Let's face it religion hasn't helped anything.

People would get enlightened much quicker because philosophical thought would prevail. People would use their brains instead of their guns. If people did not have someone telling them how to be all the time, and what to do, they would figure it out for themselves. We would still want good things for the world, and we would be more conscious of our brothers and sisters who live on this planet as well. Religions don't put any faith in mankind to take care of himself and his brothers and sisters. Religion imposes rules of conduct because religion wants the power to CONTROL EVERYONE. People who don't want to be controled, rebel. ie My religion says this thing is bad. My religion pissed me off, so I am going to do this bad thing just because I can! Am I thinking about Anarchy as a way of life? No, I'm still convinced that people need government. However do we need religions anymore? I don't think so. But that's just my opinion. We would be smarter and free thinkers without religion. So.... yes... less crap . You forgot Christianity which is the biggest rule maker and rebelled against one of them all!

far more people. take the countless millions of people that have died or have been killed in religions name and add theem into the population right now, then compensate fro how many children the average couple has and calculate for life expectancy...there would be hindreds of millions of more people here.
as for our medical and technological abilities, im willing to bet all of my money that it would be better than it is today. theres no religion to get in the way of scientific and medical progress.
religion is a hinderance in almost every single aspect of life in an advanced society. it does nothing but hold us back.

Religion is for the world of man.
What do you think would happen if one day you found yourself in the world of God?
My guess is that absent worshippers. God would clean house. Is that what you wanted to hear? You should know that that is what has been promised. That is what should happen.

We would have missed out on a lot of interesting art and architecture, for example, why build the Great Pyramid if there is no afterlife?
