AS A POLICE OFFICER I AM DISGUSTED THAT YOUR LOCAL POLICE AREN'T INTERESTED IN THIS, AS ITS DANGEROUS AND IRRITATING TO ALL THE LOCAL RESIDENTS. SPEAK TO YOUR LOCAL TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT, RATHER THAN THE LOCAL POLICE STATION, AS THESE MATTERS ARE BEST DEALT WITH BY TRAFFIC OFFICERS. IF THIS HAPPENS ON A REGULAR BASIS, THEN VIDEO OR PHOTOGRAPH THE CARS AND STICK IT UNDER THE POLICE'S NOSES. ALSO, SPEAK TO THE LOCAL DUTY INPECTOR TO SPUR THE LOCAL OFFICERS INTO ACTION, AND IF ALL ELSE FAILS PUT PRESSURE ON THE POLICE VIA THE LOCAL MEDIA. THEY'RE ALWAYS INTERESTED WHEN THE POLICE ARE BEING LAZY.
THESE ARE SERIOUS OFFENCES, AND NEED TO BE DEALT WITH. DON'T GIVE UP, PILE ON THE PRESSURE.

I have known several people who died from tragic boy racer car accidents - either on foot or as oncoming traffic. One girl i knew was expecting a child when she was wiped out off the road. hit and run. I've been struck off a bicycle, another friend i know was knocked down on the pavement. It won't be stopped unless action is taken through local council. The police won't do anything until the council has enough to make a change. You will have to fight this, right to the top. Good luck.
----
I actually sat in a train and started a conversation with a boy racer. Don't know how it started, but he had wrecked his car and had to travel the trian for a while. I asked him, without resentment, judgement, why he did what he did.
He goes out with his mate in a car and they thrill seek by speeding along country roads and going "wide" around corners and overtake on bends... they get such an amazing kick from this and he said, he wasn't ever going to stop doing what he enjoyed.
he had a girlfriend and a child, and i said, what would you do if you hit the oncoming car that had a girl and a child in it. He didn't say anything and strugged it off as if it wasn't really a problem. I then said "What if it was your girlfriend and child"... he told me then that he's very careful about not hitting anyone and that he can pull away at the last minute no matter how dangerous it was. He and his mate are willing to die for their thrill seeking.

The problem is an age old one, which the police have little resources in which they can help in individual cases such as this.
If a lot of people were affected by this, and all complained to the police, they may well mount an operation to catch a few offender, but this is only a short term solution.
Traffic police resources have declined in recent years, and those that remain have had their duties re-assigned, to encompass all manner of different types of work, including armed response duties. So the good old days of a traffic cop dealing with speeders is long gone. All to the detriment of people like yourself, and society as a whole.

What about approaching the press? Contact your local newspaper and see if they will do a story on it. do a little research and find out if there have been any accidents, speak to as many neighbors as poss for support. Once the prob is made public, the authorities have more of an obligation to deal with the problem. also, you could also contact your local MP with the same prob. I'd totally harras both press and the MP until something was done about it. Remember to show both of them proof that all other authorities have refused to solve the problem. Good luck.

This is a common problem and its very frustrating that the authorities won't entertain any action until fatalities have occurred.
It is the type of problem that is often solved by a good publicity campaign. You will need something like a residents' committee to plan a course of action. Local councillors and political parties are often easy to get on board, especially in the run up to an election as it looks good for them if they can get a positive result. They have the advantage of having activists experienced at campaigning and lobbying.

The police will only become interested once there's been a number of fatalities on the road. With luck this will only involve the idiots who are driving fast etc., but you will get a better response if you are able to catch the offenders on video and take the evidence to your local authority - they may be able to put in traffic calming measures.

Its the council you need to contact, not the police. They are the ones who decide on the budget and on what money goes where for road safety.
Maybe you could suggest other traffic calming measures instead of just cameras which people just break for, and the speed up once past? Im thinking chacanes and speed humps.

The answer to this is simple, get as many of the local residents who feel the same way to sign a petition to the effect that you want some form of traffic calming measures installed and or safety cameras and deliver copies to your local newspaper, chief Constable, County council, and Member of Parliament at the same time then wait and watch the s*** hit the fan.

The problem is that the police need set conditions to set a speed trap and a winding lane isn't good enough!.. They are interested, but it's difficult to work within the red tape that they face!

There seems to be a trend with the answers here in that the police don't seem to want to know when these offences are committed. A letter to the chief constable reminding him that police officers are public servants. They seem to forget the servant bit once they put the uniform on!!
