Poodles are hypoalergenic. They have hair & not fur. My dad's alergic, and he had two for a while.
Now, there is a breed of cat that is just awsome. I have 2 of 'em. They called Devon Rex, and they are related to the Spinx cats, who have no hair. Devon rex's have hair, but it's very short & it's curly (that's what the "rex" means). If you're alergic to cats but want one, I would find some devon rex's and put them on your face, see how you cope with them. My girlfriend is alergic to long hair cats, but has not problems with the Devons. It seems that if you're EXTREMELY ALERGIC, you may still have a reaction to them. If you're only somewhat alergic, you can probably be around them, no problem.
The thing is, they're THE WORLD'S MOST AWSOME BREED OF CAT. They're MIND-BLOWINGLY cute, they're extremely smart & playful, they love people and are more interactive than many cats. Type in "devon rex" on google images to see what they look like. The only problem: they're kinda expensive. Ya gotta find a breeder, which means you'll pay a few hundred bucks, and you won't be able to go down to the pound and get 'em.

The ones with the least hair.
For cats its one called the Rex or Sphinx cat(it looks weird, it has no hair, but is actually very nice)
For dogs the Chihuahua and there is also a "hairless" version of them, but someone else might know that breeds name, I dont.

Spinx cat, it is hairless, and has little dander..not so cute though. There are also breeds of hairless dogs which make great pets for people with bad allergies. Though these days there are meds that can let a person with allergies still live with pets.

Poodles, and many poodle crosses are supposed to be hypoallergenic, and they don't shed. Don't know about cats though.
