The virgin birth is a commonly-used spiritual metaphor for representing spiritual enlightenment; in some stories, it's used for the Buddha. Its symbolism is that the person's experience makes them realize that they are not the body (this awakening is represented as being newly born and, since the identity is with 'spirit' as opposed to the body/animal nature, the virgin birth is used). Taking it literally on either side misses the intent.

This is a good question. I did see on the Discovery Channel that there have been cases of women becoming pregnant with out sexual intercourse. I can't remember what it's called but it has happened. So is it possible that Mary conceived with out having sex...yes. Is it also possible for it to have been a cover up...yes. Mary and Joseph were not married at the time Mary became pregnant...that was a no-no back then that was punishable by death. Also, Mary could have been sexually involved with someone else other than Joesph and used the "immaculate conception" story as her alibi. It just depends on what you want to believe since there is no physical proof of any of it.
The way I look at it is. Even if it's just a "myth" it doesn't change what and who Jesus was and what he stood for. The lessons he taught are still the same....he's still Jesus no matter how Mary got knocked up. Whether she had sex or it was immaculate conception is really not all that important. If you believe Jesus was born and he was truly enlightened they what difference does it make how he was born?

A prophecy.
Jesus was to be born absent of original sin.
At the end of Genesis you get to the part where Eve is punished for the biting of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil by being given painful births and menstration. That is supposed to represent original sin. If mary gave birth as a Virgin then Jesus was born free of original sin as the prochecies fore told.
There are those who contend that Jesus had a large family. Joseph apparently was married before Mary so he already had children from his first wife. And it is believed they had children after Jesus. For that reason it is not possible to say conclusively that she was a virgin at Jesus' birth. It has to be taken on faith or not at all.
BTW, many if not all of the apostles and John the Baptist have been pressumed to be siblings or cousins of Jesus. They did a special on this on the history channel where they tried to explain it to everyone's satisfaction.

A quick lesson in logic to some of the people who answered this question.
White Tiger ..
No it isn't a cover. There is no evidence of such a cover-up.
Proof for a "cover up" is not needed. Lying about how you could have gotten pregnant is not extrordinary. However and immaculate conception is extrordinary. Therefore it is this which requires the evidence. And there is exactly ZERO evidence for it. Throughout hundreds of thousands of years of human history no one has ever been immaculately conceived.

What kind of cover. No cover. Just a fact. He was conceived by The Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary. Think about it.
Okay I will think about... nope still sounds crazy. This has never happened before in the history of mankind. Or any mammal for that matter. To think you can make this leap logically is a HUGE fallicy.

I believe it may have been a virgin birth. There are many things being discovered about what we in this day would call ancient technology that have scientist scratching their heads. It's no big deal in our time to get a woman pregnant without the physical act so who's to say some society back then didn't have the same techniques?

Forget that whole thing. I don't know why all that started. Mary did not give birth to Jesus as a result of an immaculate conception or any other kind. Jesus was the bastard son of the local warlord. He had loads of them by his myriad of 'wives' and they gave them away. She was told she'd have to take one to bring up. Jesus was just another one of them. It's fairly clear that's the story. There's no excuse for the fairytale interpretation Christians put about.
The daddy's name was Dave. No record of the mother was made. They didn't think it was important who the 'cow' was. Read it up again. Different time, different culture. It's appalling, I know.

Virgin birth sounds impossible to me. Maybe, Mary just didn't know who the father was. That was long before condoms and the Maury Povich show.
