HIV can lurk in the human system for 10, even 15 yrs, but this is extremely rare. so likely, you are just fine. however, once you become sexually active again, all a negative HIV test means is that your body is not producing enough HIV antibodies to be detected. you could score negative, but still have HIV...and it would not show up on a test. the only truly safe thing to do is abstain from sex until you enter a permanent, lifelong commitment to one person who has made the same choice.
BTW, while condoms reduce risk to some extent, saying they are "safe" is nothing short of delusional. the irony of condoms is that the diseases that are permanent and/or life threatening- AIDS, herpes, genital warts - are not necessarily preventable with a condom. the HIV virus is small enough to pass through a hole in a condom that is too small for a sperm cell to pass through. For the record; a condom will not prevent you from getting genital warts or herpes - it depends on the location of the infection, and the integrity of the condom.
oh, BTW; genital warts account for around 99% of cervical cancer - which is one of the top three killers of women in the united states. genital warts cause cervical cancer. period. not to mention that genital warts also seem to responsible for the growing number of urethral cancers in men - a formerly rare and extremely aggressive form of cancer with a high mortality rate. oh and there is also the large number of women who die because of undetected chlamydia and gonnorhea infections.
one can also contract genital herpes through oral sex - if the person has a cold sore on their mouth, they can pass the herpes to their partner's genitals. cold sores are contagious for up to 2 days before they appear, and stay contagious until nearly gone. and herpes is a permanent disease - the gift that keeps on giving:)
bottom line. when you are sexually active outside of a lifelong commitment, you are playing with your life. don't let anybody tell you otherwise. if you have gone nine years without being sexually active, then you are probably at the lowest risk factor, next to abstinence. don't give up all that peace of mind lightly - sleeping at night is underrated.
i say this as someone who has lost a lot of sleep in the past.
mark twain said "sex is the most overrated pleasure in life, while defecation is the most underrated".

I do know that you would have to have 3 tests for HIV spaced roughly 3 months apart each, but if you had sex 9 years ago then I would have thought that the one test for HIV would be enough, however, for some one that has more regular sex or has been been thru a sex attack the tests are carried out over a period of time. At least that is the way it was when I was back home (Zimbabwe). You should maybe speak to your doc to clarify.

Trust me...if the last time u had sex was 9yrs ago, u wouldn't need any kinda test 2 show u caught something coz if u did, it'd either have showed its ugly face or killed u by now.
So bottom line is...ur fine :D

yes, that means that you are not infected with HIV or any STDs. It's still wise to use a condom if you have sex though, so you can prevent it from happening!

That means you are good to go. Just keep doing what you are doing- or umm, NOT doing in your case, and keep safe when you decide to start doing it again, OK? Be well.
