Try one hand palm up, towards the person you offended or wish to pacify, that's the sign of regret or humiliation

Like the others said, I tend to hold up my left hand with my palm facing the other driver and an "I'm so sorry" look. I also mouth the word "sorry" if they're looking at me.
A few years ago, I invented an apparatus that goes on top of your car and flashes different messages like "You moron" or "You're gonna get yourself killed" or "Slow down, police ahead" or "Go directly to Drivers School. Do not pass go, do not collect $200" or "Oops, didn't see you." Well, I didn't actually invent it, but I did imagine it.... LOL! And, every time some stupid Atlanta driver pi$$es me off, I think about my flashing signs...

Excellent question! I have started using the Peace sign if somone is driving poorly. Someone pulled out in front of me and showed me the peace sign, and it took all of my hostility away, because I knew they were sorry and we all are not perfect drivers. I have been using it ever since and most people return the sign. Beats flipping the bird at people! LMAO!

I almost crashed into this woman a few months ago - it was really both our faults (and we we driving the exact same car, very funny) anyway - we really came close to a head on collision. We both braked quickly and avoided contact and both of us stuck up our hands and kind of shook them (palms forward) and we were kind of laughing. Then we pulled nearer to each other and rolled down the window - we both apologized profuslely and still laughed admitting our part of the error. We then both went on our merry way neither of us hating the other.

Wave your hands and if they can see you use lip signal by saying sorry. It does wonders. I once had a guy who cut me off and boy was I pissed but then he stuck his head outside the window and looked at me and said he sorry and wave his hand. It completely cooled me off and I have never forgotten that nice gesture from him. It was about 10 years ago this happened, and I still remember him in a positive way.

Hold up your hand palm inward and fingers curled up in your palm. Pretend to chew your knuckles nervously, then move your hand just enough to reveal the saddest face you can manage, you know, the big puppy-dog eyes, etc. (and perhaps some visible sniffing will make the meaning clearer).

I wish there were one sign that everybody would agree on.
I usually hold my hand up, palm facing the driver, with a chagrined expression on my face.

Univerally accepted is the hippie peace sign. You could also hold up a piece of paper with your number on it.
