Well, I'll tell you my story. We found 3 kittens whose mother had just been run over by a car outside of our house. We took the kittens in and we raised them. About a year after we found the kittens, we got a puppy. It took our cats some time to get used to the dog (about a month or two), but now the cats and our dog are friendly towards each other!

Yes he will. The hissing and growling is completely normal. It's stressful enough to a cat when their environment has suddenly changed. It's worse when there's a dog added into the mix. The cat is simply communicating to the dog, "I don't know you, but I'm not afraid of you and if you get any closer there's gonna be trouble!" Much of that is all bluff, but the cat needs to assert himself to thwart off any potential threat. It's 100% natural. Let them work it out between themselves. Hissing and growling is okay. You should only intervene if there is physical aggression, and then only remove the aggressor, not the target. In time, the hissing and growling will become less and less. The cat may never like the dog (especially an adult cat), but it will learn to tolerate him. You can help by introducing them gradually and never leaving them alone unsupervised until you are convinced they can coexist peacefully. Never put either animal in a situation they cannot escape from (like a corner or an enclosed room). Allow the cat the ability to escape vertically by climbing up a cat tree or a tall shelf. This will help the cat get used to the dog from a safe distance and still be within sight of it. Give both of your pets equal love. Once you get your pets to love and trust you, they will learn to love and trust each other. Good luck. :-)

Lots of dogs and cats get along well if they're raised together. Twice I've had a cat move in with me and my dachshund. They never actually fought. At first my dog would growl and show her teeth and the cat would hiss and run away. After awhile they just began to ignore each other. I'd be careful tho, the cat can do alot of damage to your dog with it's claws.

Yes. Keep him. They will get along eventually. I have 8 cats and three dogs - all of them were homeless (as opposed to purchased) 4 cats came from the pound, 3 came from people we knew, 1 was a stray, and all 3 dogs were strays. They will get a long eventually. Sounds like the cat is just afraid the dog is going to hurt him - it will wear off. You should give that cat extra love - I am sure he is afraid you are going to leave him as well.

With time, many animals can learn to at least tolerate each other. Your cat is hissing at your dog because it feels threatened. It's a totally new situation for the cat (even if it's been around dogs before, it hasn't been around this particular dog). Just give them time, and keep an eye out for any fights.

Give him some time. I just got a new kitten and he hissed and growled at the dogs for several days. He still does ocassionally, but mostly now he just plays with them. My other 3 cats get along with the dogs just fine. Good luck!!

My cats don't get along with dogs period, it is just nature, and it is very normal that your dog and the cat reacted like that, I would either have all dogs ar all cats, I personally refuse to mix my cats with dogs and I preffer a cat over a dog any day!

With time I tink it will possibly get used to your dog. My cat loves my dog. When I first got my cat he hissed at my dog too. Whenever my cat is in a fight my dog lets me know by barking and he chases the bad cat away.

They will get used to each other. They will develop an understanding with each other but it might take a while. We were in a similar situation and it took about 3 months for the cat to quite snarling at our dog.
