Do you have a hobby? I would use it for a hobby/guest room. If not maybe a library/guest room?

1. Take a lodger

2. Redecorate and invite lots of friends and family to stay

3. Take up a hobby and use that room for whatever your hobby is.

He'll probably be back so don't get rid of things to fast. When your sure he won't be back you can use it as a guest room. If he's getting married, how about a room for grandchildren to visit.
