My firend is harassing me because I just say "My car needs washed." He says the car "needs to be washed". I think grammatically they are both correct. Do you agree?

correct grammer would be either "My car needs to be washed," or "my car needs washing."

But who cares if your friend is right? Punch him in the kidney and you'll be the real winner!

It's great that you are working on your Grammar. It shows you are a little more refined than your "who gives a care" yahoo'ers.

The proper way to say it would be "Needs to be washed"

Need Washed is a contradiction of tense. Need would be present tense, and washed is past tense. In a sentence, you need to keep your tenses the same.

So technically, yes, "need washed" is grammatically incorrect.

The car needs to be washed. "Needs washed" sounds very rural, and it's technically an improper use of English. But face it, people would know what you mean either way you phrased the sentence. Your grammar may be questionable, but your friend is a tightass.

Now go wash that car. :)

Correct grammar would be "needs to be washed."

In some places I've lived -- especially central Pennsylvania -- the locals omit the "to be" and say "needs washed."

In the Northern Virginia area outside D.C. where I live now, people use the "to be." But, of course, everyone knows that the D.C. area is the center of all that's intelligent and correct in the world. :)

No, I think your friend is right. "The car needs to be washed" or you could say "The car needs washing". "Needs Washed" doesn't make since.

Needs is present tense. Washed is past tense. Putting the two together in a phrase is incorrect.
