We Brits have a long. long history - much longer than many other nations do and we have nothing to prove. We do make fun of our flag and wear it, muck about with it and see it in some, perhaps, inappropriate places. BUT make no mistake, when push comes to shove, we are still dammned proud of it. Brits by nature, in the main, just like to live and let live. You can have a go at us and wind us up no end and we will go along with it - to a point. Pass that point and, well, you bother us and we will bother you, as the saying goes.

It's plastered over everything this side, so I guess it must be their way of showing their patrionism?

Yes - why not? It's only a collection of colours and shapes. Yes, it has meaning but it isn't sacred.

It's ours, we reserve the right to use it anyway we like, including making fun of it.
