Now adays I am doing prreaty good money wise and eating alot of red meat ( more than ever) every steak I have I trim ALL the fat off (even a really marbled ribeye) and I feed it to my dog- is that a bad thing? Should I quit all together? or is it ok- just a couple times a year.? please let me know if i am hurting my dog.
also- pork bones? are they bad for dogs? i always said they are but my BF keeps givin them to her.

The fat won't hurt the dog unless the dog has a weight problem, and then it just means you are feeding him too much in general.

The replies telling you not to do it by comparing dog physiology to human physiology are simply wrong. Dogs are natural carnivores, whereas humans are omnivores. A diet that would be bad for a human is natural for a dog, and vice versa. Commercial canned dog foods contain far more fat than would be healthy for a human, but it's fine for the dog. You don't see people saying humans shouldn't eat chocolate because it's poisonous to dogs, so I don't know why they think the comparison works in the other direction.

However - from a TRAINING perspective, you should not feed the dog table food. It gives him an inflated sense of his status in the "pack" compared to you and the rest of the members of your family.

Steak Trimmings

Our dogs like occassional BARF, but we had a major problem with colitis in two dogs when we tried it as the total diet. One dog actually had to go on chronic antibiotic therapy for over a year. We feed Royal Canin now, and use Avangers canned food, yogurt, and home cooked chicken snacks now. I have to add, our vet bills for that year were over a thousand dollars. I would not consider BARF as a sole diet for any dog of mine in the future. Edit: Both dogs were 10 weeks old when we started Barf. The colitis or IBD(as pointed out by another contributor) started almost immediately. We did a BARF diet with raw chicken, veggies, yogurt, eggs, and lamb, as well as large beef bones. The dog that got sickest loved the food, just did not tolerate it. While the prinicple of the BARF diet sounds good, every dog is an individual, and if you choose to use it, keep a close eye on your pet, and make certain he is as enthused about the diet as you are. Personally, I think the best diet for a dog is a varied diet, and that raw food on occassion is okay.

A little fat shouldn't hurt, but working your dog into a habit of eating steak fat trimmings can hurt you in the long run. Just like people, as your dog gets older, it gets harder for them to keep weight off (they get more lethargic, etc.) Now, if your dog regularly expects steak fat in addition to it's own food, you may run into a calorie problem and make your dog overweight as she ages. If you continue this for very long, the dog will certainly develop a habit of begging for the fat, and as you probably know, it's very, very difficult to break a dog of habits that it's formed over a period of years.

As for the bones - everything I have read says to keep dogs away from cooked bones. They splinter too easily. I don't feed my dogs any bones - cooked or uncooked.

Fat is VERY bad. Stop doing that. Grizzle is ok and the steak is ok. Bones can splinter and cause damage. Buy the bones made for dogs to play with.

I would think that the fat would be good for its coat. Maybe not giving it too much, but I dont think it would hurt it occasionally.

You should never feed your dog table scraps of any sort this leads to picky eaters

you should not feed your dog the fat of meats it is unhealthy for her as it is for you. colesterol is not good, if you want to treat her give her the same meat parts that you eat.
my dog eats the bones of anything that don't fly or swim.
